Any advice on cast iron school-style radiators?

I've heard they can be slow to heat up and cool down and prone to rusting but I still want to install them in our soon-to-be-refurbished ground floor [excited emoticon].

Any experiences, good or bad?

Our house currently on right move has them downstairs, which my rubbish link may show you.

They were there when we bought the house 8 years ago downstairs only, and do look great. However there is a noticeable difference in temperature between upstairs and downstairs .

I think they were also to blame for filling our new combi boiler with crud so it pretty much needed rebuilt. A magnet trap I believe can prevent that. Hth .

Ooh Bumbez, your house is so lovely. Why are you moving? Is the next one even nicer? If so, I am EnvyEnvyEnvy.

Thanks for the advice. We mentioned it to a plumber friend who was pretty dismissive but I think we're going to go with them anyway unless anyone here strongly recommends otherwise.

Thankyou miss, the next house is very similar with the much coveted garage and parking for Dh - we'll have a substantial mortgage so don't be too Envy

Good luck with your refurbishment :)

We have recently had an extension built and wanted column radiators. We looked into getting reconditioned radiators but decided not on advice of our plumber. Instead he recommended these Radiators

We decided on them and they look great. Lots of positive comments about them too. They take a bit longer to heat up, but retain the heat longer.

Thanks Bumbez and thanks Catclarks - your radiators look lovely so I think I may try to persuade DH that we go for those instead.

Only that they can do a fair amount of damage to a 6 yrs head when he fell on one at church!! A&E followed by stitches! I know thats not particularly helpful Grin

MissPollysTrolleyed · 16/08/2012 13:15

That's surprisingly relevant Mandy. I have a very accident-prone 2yo.

We installed a (Myson-rip-off) radiators from B&Q like those in cat's link.
5 Years on I am utterly fed up trying to get the dust off them.
They are IMPOSSIBLE to keep clean. Beware! Or get a dark colour - we foolishly went for white.

MissPollysTrolleyed · 16/08/2012 14:36

I was thinking of painting them dark green or dark grey. Do you think that would work?
