Calling Piglet John and others! Integrated fridge door mounting issue.

I've got an old Whirlpool integrated fridge that we need to reinstall in the kitchen. Model number has rubbed off. How do we attach the door? DH asked in B and Q and was told he needed a manufacturer specific spare part, but without the model number we're a bit flummoxed as to how to find one.

have you pulled it out and looked for a makers plate on the back?

presumably this one does not have a label inside, like a Bosch, and you no longer have the instruction book?

Try the Whirlpool UK website, or some of the Spares Direct type companies. If you take some photos of the appliance and state its age and exact measurements, someone will recognise it. Or a local appliance repairman, for a charge.

B&Q are useless for that sort of thing, unless you happen to meet someone who learned the job before joining. Last time I went there, some bloke in an orange suit came up to me and asked if I wanted decking. Luckily I got the first punch in.

Right, we've established it's an AMB575K but the spares websites are as much use as a chocolate teapot - there are various parts listed but we have no idea what the heck they are. Reluctant to call out local appliance person as they seemingly don't get out of bed for less than £100 these days.

Have you found the Whirlpool website, and does it have a spares section?

For example the Bosch website has exploded diagrams.

I gather from what you say that you bought the appliance second-hand with no doors, is that right?

BoffinMum · 17/08/2012 19:04

No, it used to be in that spot, we uninstalled it some years ago, and we have lost the fixings now we want to put it back again.

Whirlpool site singularly unhelpful.

this? can't see how it works

If you can get the user instructions off the website it might explain

BoffinMum · 19/08/2012 15:49

I think that may be the one!!! Let me consult with DH and we'll get back to you!

Well, the problem is solved. The guy fitting my kitchen worktops managed to make a special hole and screw through the actual door of the fridge into the unit door, and it worked! The seal fits around it all and the fridge maintains its temperature in the same way. Success!

Kitchen is looking great now - wooden doors painted cream (Crown trade mix of F & B Off White), beech knobs that feel wonderfully fat and tactile under the hand, mid walnut laminate worktops from Magnet, new stainless steel sink and posh Victorian style taps from Magnet. We've transformed a kitchen that was out of date when it was installed in 1997 into something that looks like it is in a magazine. Grin

I think I can visualise that

do you mean the fridge door swings on its own hinges, and remains attached to the fridge as usual, but the decor door is stuck on the front?

I imagine a gap between the fridge and the adjacent unit to prevent knocking into it?

BoffinMum · 03/09/2012 16:28

yes, that's right, and it doesn't knock into anything for some bizarre and wonderful reason.
