Mirror above fireplace - essential or dull?

Just painted Victorian living room in yellow with brown panelling (babouche and london clay for F&B afficionados). Previously had a brass mirror above the fire but now that won't go with the yellow. Not sure whether to look for another mirror or go for a painting. I guess a mirror is the classic thing to have over a fireplace and think it would make my rather narrow room a bit wider but am tempted by going for something more original. Anyone have anything different and do you like it? It's a typical Victorian knocked through living room, with alcoves on either side of fire.

Do the alcoves have bookshelves? I'd be tempted to put matching mirrors in the alcoves and have a picture over the fireplace.

Good idea fresh. No bookcases as we have a study next door which will be book depositary. Am going to look for console table for one and have got big retro armchair which will be partially in the other next to bay.

I like art above the fire as I often find myself staring there! I prefer a mirror on the wall opposite the window

I thought the same. We do have a huge mirror over one of ours but we have a tatty old oil painting of someone's Victorian maiden aunt that I got in a junk shop over the other one. It is much better than it sounds and looks fab. I bought it really for the rather lovely chipped gilt frame but it has grown on me. Living Etc website is a good source of inspiration I think for slightly quirky takes on the trad setup.

Great. Depends on your look but slightly 'foxed' mirrors can look great in that situation. I'd also try to get a lamp on the console so it can reflect in the mirror - double the light. Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs!

Not at all, good ideas. Have put the mirror up for now but am going to look for art, I think. There is an art trail at the start of September near us so hoping I can find something original. Thanks for website ogre.

I've always intended to get a mirror for above the fireplace but somehow never got around to it. The mantlepiece is filled with big and traily plants instead and it looks lovely and a tendril has only gone up in flames once
