Hi all

Having DS2, trying to be a bit more sensible this time. Last time i had 5 really lovely muslins that i reserved for out of the house then had a load of plain white ones too. This time Rather than waste money for vanity, id like to dye my white ones.

Could anyone link me a strong aqua or green dye that is good to use? Im a bit scared of using a machine dye just in case it resides so hand dye would be my preference. Any advice greatfully recieved Grin

Dylon is good. I've dyed a lot of DS's stuff. Navy is excellent for hiding all sorts of stains on babygrows. Just be careful not to boil wash it afterwards, as, unfortunately, it does seem to run a bit.

Thanks pluto, so when I do them am
I right in thinking that i need to dye them then wash them? Would they be ok on a 30 wash once they'd been washed a few times? Would you recommend navy over a green? Im intrigued! Grin

Why don't you just bleach them?

BBwolefs · 06/08/2012 21:51

As they are white already... Im looking to change them to a colour

Yes, I tend to put my dyed things in a cooler wash and even a couple of years' worth of use later, they're still there. The navy has worn best, better than the dark green, which has kind of lost depth. Light blue has done well, too, especially when applied to yellow (e.g. a pale yellow cellular blanket which came up a very soft green).

BBwolefs · 06/08/2012 22:12

Oh thanks i will start with the muslins and then who knows Grin

I dyed a number of DS's blue things for DD, so can also recommend avoiding the Dylon yellow, which is a bit brassy and the resulting green not as nice... Sad.

Ketuk · 06/08/2012 22:19

Dylon cold dye works well, have used it several times- just be sure to use an old receptacle for the dye bath (not new bath or anything)

I dyed some 12 yo towels from lavender to mid-blue (bright, marine blue) 8 years ago, and they're still going strong!

But why is this under property? Confused

BBwolefs · 07/08/2012 07:06

Thanks Grin

Well i figured it whatever DIY?! Couldnt find the craft topic haha!

Im definitely going to give it a go! Going to use a bucket i think!

What's wrong with White ones though?

BBwolefs · 08/08/2012 13:12

They are plain and boring Grin

OP posts:
herhonesty · 08/08/2012 13:41

err.... do you really have time to think about the colour of your muslins?

BBwolefs · 08/08/2012 14:27

Yeah quite clearly I do. WTF has it to do with you how i spend my time?? What a pointless bloody post.

OP posts:
plutocrap · 08/08/2012 21:21

Don't worry about the criticism. In fact, plain muslins are not just boring, but it's hard to spot the possets on them, so you could be rubbing sour milk on your baby's face! (At least that was my fear when I decided to dye our muslins Shock!)

Rhubarbgarden · 08/08/2012 22:00

Don't be afraid of washing machine dye. I re-dye my sofa covers with black dye in the washing machine once a year, and my whites still come out persil white afterwards - never had any problems with residue.

herhonesty · 08/08/2012 22:18

Bit like your post really...

There's a housekeeping thread I believe.. You might get more help there.

BBwolefs · 09/08/2012 07:18

Ive got all the help I need here thank you. Using a phone not all topics are visible. Seriously though what a negative person you must be to take umbridge at a person asking a question! I personally find white muslins a bit plain, i also find at a baby group there is a chance for them to become muddled and the thought of using someone elses sick cloth on my child makes me boak so I though it might be fun to just dye them... How exactly is that offensive?? They are my property and im looking to DIY them another colour.

In all honesty herhonesty, dont you have better things to do than comment on threads that you have no information for??

Thanks for all you advice everyone else ive order a dylon navy and dark green so will do half one colour and half the other, the salt I need to use can you just use any old salt?

Thanks for the info re machine dye i had visions of green washing Grin

I was actually trying to be helpful, by suggesting an alternative thread were you might get more help. Sorry I have offended you so much.

BBwolefs · 09/08/2012 07:29

That would have been helpful had i not already received help. The offence was caused by such condescending gems as "do you really have time to worry about the colour of your muslins"...
