PLEASE if theers anyone who can advise on cheap but totally effective soundproofing. child and i have mental probs, autism, misophonia (fear of certain noises) incl diy. house (5th move in 6 years cosv this) is old and not soundproofed. semi-detatched. neighbour THREE houses down diying all day and show no signs of stopping. and sounds like it's next door. (checked this).have tried pinning rugs, the eggboxes thing, boxes, fitted cupboards against party walls (next door sometimes does it too) have told them about medical probs but can't expect street to live by our ways, can't move again and doctors etc never take us seriously about providing us with something detatched (council prop, Im a full time carer for child).we had to go out to get away from it (even tho understand people have a right to do up their houses, trying to be fair) but always feel driven out cosv our medical issues. PLEASE. Any ideas for soundproofing? needs to be good but cheap. desperate, we're doing our heads in. Thanx

How cheap does it need to be?

There are soundproofing boards you can put against your walls which will soundproof very well. You lose a few inches of the rooms which you are soundproofing, but they are very effective.

Have you tried wearing ear plugs? Might be more effective in situations like this.

thanx for replying. cant wear earplugs as need to listen out for autistic child and other sounds and child cant wear earplugs.

dont mind losing inches off walls, but am on income support cosv being a fulltime carer for child so limited funds and gps won't help and push council to help.

where can i find soundproofing boards? Ive tried everything else.

Know what you mean, sound seems to permeate through skirting and floors as well as walls etc. we have double glazing, and in fact, like you, traffic noise is bearable, as are planes (we are in a flight path), its 'people' noise, diy, loud music, banging doors etc that severely affect us. we've tried the fan/soft music/ thick curtains etc but neither of us can stand noise over noise. ive tried explaining to gps, and the like, but they don't seem to understand. and on a hot day we end up keeping windows closed (they are good windows) or ending up going out (we also, on top of everything else suffer with the heat) but can't stay out long because of our illnesses. Aaaarrrgh!pathetic isnt it? canr afford to buy a detatched cottage in the middle of a field in devon, that would be ideal. short of winning the lottery....

You should be able to find soundproofing boards in builder's merchants, but I don't know how much they cost, sorry.

I live in a farm in the middle of nowhere but it's not as quiet as you think, believe me! Nature can be bloody noisy too...
