Apart from the slightly questionable decor, what's wrong with this house?

DH and I are considering a move from London to Devon and looking at houses within spitting distance of Exeter. This seems like a lot of house for the money. Obviously the 9th bedroom is more of a cupboard (but who needs 9?!). What else am I missing?

Oh lordy, yes its blantant nit picking, then! Obviously.

Mintyy · 05/08/2012 17:38

Blantant nit-picking? What's that when its at home then?

Can anyone shed some light on Crediton's shady side that LadyEmma hinted at above?

TheHouseofMirth · 05/08/2012 20:24

I didn't mean to offend anyone by casting aspersions on the way the house is decorated. It's a subjective matter amd it's not to my taste (though I'd like to think most people would also agree the fake plants in picture 12 are pretty grim). But yes, more importantly, what is wrong with Crediton?

It's a lovely house - so cheap. Would be at least 1.9m here. I like fake plants too as I can't kill them :)

I couldn't live with that garden. Very tricky to look after! And not big enough for the house. But I'd rather have less rooms and more garden/ more light. It is a nice house though.

Looks a bit shoehorned in, not much garden

It's on the A377 - streetview tab brings you out in slightly the wrong place. I found the house by going along Park Road and onto A377, then a couple of clicks back eastwards. It's up a steep bank behind a hedge on the right. A377 is (by Devon standards) a big, busy road with lorries roaring along it day and night - no motorways through Devon so the A-roads cop all the haulage traffic through the peninsula (though the A30 is really the main one).

Having said that, the house is set high up above the road which would mitigate the noise a bit, and if you're used to London you probably won't mind about road noise as much as a local buyer might. Only other thing I wonder is if there are any structural issues outstanding (blurb mentions "much remedial work") because it is a very hilly area. It also looks like a very exposed position. Not much fun in the winter? Crediton (only visited it a few times) is a bit of a shabby town from what I recall, but I didn't notice anything dramatically wrong. I guess most people who are bringing ex-SE money to Devon are after a country village or a coast location so that's where the prices are steep.

As an aficionado of Rightmove Grin too much time on my hands my opinion is:

Its a gorgeous house, I love the frontage, but too crammed in with the surrounding houses for my liking, I would be a little worried about the fencing/boundaries on picture 14 where it looks like you can just hop over into someones back yard.

You would need to factor in how much thr 'remedial work' is going to cost.

I'm not a fan of big slopey gardens on different levels either.

Have you looked on google earth? (I'm trying to restrain myself)

You would need to look at it during the day, again in the evening and definately at the weekend.

I love the barn, cece, give me a house in the middle of nowhere anytime!

I think I've hit the jackpot if I see a house on rightmove and its got a virtual tour Grin

ToujoursPur · 06/08/2012 20:02

On google earth you can't see the house from the street, just the drive. I quite like that.

But then I currently have a nutty neighbour who likes waving at me through the window when she sees me in the living room.

Quite town, no direct rail route to London? Not sure if the station even looks walking distance.

Depending on the age of you DC's, there doesn't look like much going on that they can get to on their own.

It's a lovely house though!
