Dark coloured big patterned wall paper on one wall, jasmine white (pale magnolia) on the others, in our bedroom. Yay or nay?

I'm wondering a similar thing for our lounge.

mylovelymonster · 03/08/2012 12:41

Surely you decorate your own house how you like it? Does it matter what's 'in'?
(Apologies - I am over 40 Grin)

mylovelymonster · 03/08/2012 12:48

Personally - and I have a lot of decorating to do - I'm going for toning colours. So I may have a room with different coloured walls, depending on it's shape and where the light comes from. This may be subtle or less so, depending on what depth of colour I want to feature. For wallpaper, I am considering adjoining walls of a colour which is fairly close to the background of the paper so the pattern will be more of a feature rather than a starkly different-coloured wall, IYSWIM. I am trying to find my own way. I don't know what's 'in' and all the interiors mags I look at look very dull and all the same.

If you're asking whether they're 'in' or 'out', the answer is definitely 'out'. But if you like it, who cares?

CuddyMum · 03/08/2012 14:35

I wouldn't worry if they're in or out. Go for it! When I eventually sell my completely neutral home and buy a new house, I'm going to be braver with colour!

Ideal for a remake of Abigail's Party.

tricot39 · 03/08/2012 17:48

just another reason for someone to decide not to buy your house - but if you are not selling any time soon do what you like.

QueenMaeve · 03/08/2012 19:51

No honestly, they've had their day I think.

Iwannamovenow · 03/08/2012 20:15

I've just ordered some Laura Ashley flowered wallpaper for one wall in our bedroom and i'll paint the other walls to match the background colour.

I love the wallpaper, but it would have been too much everywhere.

Do it :)

PorkyandBess · 03/08/2012 20:17

Definitely out. They're the equivalent of a dado rail and border in 1990.

OlympiaMumsnet · 03/08/2012 20:18

So funnily enough, I know feature walls are out but I dunno what is in.
Anyone?

Iwannamovenow · 03/08/2012 20:22

Slightly shiny walls I think.

QueenMaeve · 03/08/2012 20:28

shiny walls? as in silk paint or metallics?

CuddyMum · 03/08/2012 20:32

I have slightly shiny walls - mainly because I have teenage daughters who leave orange foundation finger prints everywhere!!

PorkyandBess · 03/08/2012 20:33

I went to an uber trendy house the other day. It had concrete walls all the way up the stairs, fairly shiny and very warm looking.

It was absolutely gorgeous.

Moln · 03/08/2012 20:48

not sure about the wallpaper but feature colours seems to be the way to go.

i've a few paint books here and different coloured walls or blocks of colour seem to be the trend of 2012.

In other words it doesn't seem to be that there's one wall in one colour and all others in another but some walls (could be one mind) in one colour and others in another strikingly different shade or in a contrasting colour. alternativly there contrasting blocks of colour going on circles, large square or horizontal stripes.

Saying all that if you want a feature wall go for it!

I've never understood why someone wouldn't buy a house because of how it's painted! (even though it apprently does happen!)

Moln · 03/08/2012 20:50

Oh and greys and purples seem to be the 'in' colours

fresh · 03/08/2012 20:57

I also think that fully papered rooms are still in. Just not the massive swirly flowery stuff that's been seen on feature walls - more understated patterns.

QueenMaeve · 03/08/2012 21:13

papered all over is lovely

Stokey · 04/08/2012 16:52

Greige seems to be colour of the moment, elephants breath and such like. Am ignoring and going for yellows and purples but am planning to stay here for a long time. Did feature wall in designer guild paper in old place in 2007, but do think it has had its day.

Fizzylemonade · 04/08/2012 17:29

In previous houses we always knew that our intention was to move so when it was all in I did the chocolate leather sofa look with mocha and cream walls etc.

Now we are in our forever house and at last I could inject some colour of my own choice.

So yes, I have a feature wall in my lounge, not wallpapered but painted a duck egg blue and the rest of the room is jasmine white. It is north facing with a lot of windows but it couldn't have coped with the duck egg blue on every wall.

My bedroom is totally the same duck egg blue on every wall but it is south facing so that works fine.

To be honest, it is my house and I couldn't give a damn whether people like it or not, we like it and that is all that matters. If other people comment on if they like it that is nice but I did it for us not for other people.

Unless you are selling, do what the hell you like. We are individuals after all so why do our houses have to be identical?

fussychica · 04/08/2012 19:11

Oh dear we have just done a papered feature wall in the bedroom - don't care I love it! Looks like I might have made another style boo boo - lounge muddy puddle/nutmeg white complete with chocolate leather sofa with accent cushions. My home style is a bit like my wardrobe - too old to worry about fashion!

Schoolworries · 05/08/2012 13:42

I love feature walls and plan to do more. There are some truly beautiful wallpapers out there ( I have my eye on a couple Nina Campbell ones) but personally I feel the room will be too overwhelmed with every wall wallpapered so just one wall makes sense.

I dont do "trends" though.I prefer classic looks, so Im not bothered by what is in fashion.
