Painting pine furniture - has anyone made a success of this?

I have tried and failed at this in the past, is there a secret to it please re products and preparation? For a nice finish (not shabby chic) that lasts, doesn't stain through or get knock/peel off easily.

I have a old pine chest of drawers, it has a clear polyurethane varnish on it right now.

The rest of the bedroom has white painted furniture I would quite like to get it to match but it would need to be a nice hard-wearing finish on it, for a children's room.

You will need to sand it properly to give the new paint a "key" to hold it on, and do this between each coat.

I painted a dresser recently, I used Crown Satinwood, and two coats and it is perfect (very very pale green, I also replaced the pine knobs on the doors and drawers with brushed steel knobs)

It's in my hall (so gets stuff dumped on it) and has no marks at all (but it's only me and 15 yo DD so not a lot of wear)

You might need to put a protective coat over the paint if it's for a children's room. Pine is v soft so it's easily dented (I've seen it happen to a table at a children's party - a plastic fork left permanent marks!)

Thank you, you didn't use a primer then? Also did you use a brush or roller to apply? Thank you

I have just painted a pine table bought on ebay. I sanded down then used Zinsser primer (they have it in trade shops like Brewers) although have used international before with good results. I then used 2 coats of little greene paint co oil eggshell., lightly sanding between coats. I love the results and have used little greene eggshell before with good durable results. Also use a good quality brush, I have found the Wickes Master paintbrush range to be excellent.
