Kitchen flooring

Just ordered our new kitchen (so excited!) and I thought I had decided on flooring (Karndean) but now leaning towards tiles. I am just afraid if I drop a hot pan or boiling oil (done both in the past) that the Karndean would melt. No idea if this is actually possible by the way.

Anyway, the kitchen has gloss doors, would gloss floor tiles be ok or would it be too much? Should I be looking at matt tiles?

Gloss tiles from what I understand are a total PITA to keep clean. Show every smear and mark. I am rubbish at aesthetics but I take note of the pragmatic stuff...

BiscuitNibbler · 29/07/2012 21:59

Oh really? Damn. My current floor is a total nightmare to keep clean, it is matt but is riven, and all the dirt accumulates in the ridges. I loathe it. I thought gloss would be easy to mop.

Mind you, the cabinets are gloss, so no doubt I will be too busy noticing every smear and mark on them to notice the floor.

I have just got polished tiles in kitchen. I hate them. They show every little speck and smear and need daily mopping to look half presentable, a total pita. Avoid at all costs unless you like daily mopping. Just get the Karndean and be careful.

We have porcelain tiles which are matt (ish) and still need a fair amount of cleaning. Frie

Gah. Stupid phone.

Friend has gloss black tiles which are an outlet for her OCD high maintenance - she mops and polishes them every evening.

CointreauVersial · 30/07/2012 00:02

Get matt tiles that are fairly smooth, or have flecks/stone-effect. Ours are cream, slightly textured, and hide the dirt nicely!

Glossy floors show every speck of dust. My sister has gloss tiles and really regrets it.

Glossy cupboard doors are actually quite easy to clean - I have a good go at mine with Windowlene and an e-cloth, but only once every month or so.

BiscuitNibbler · 30/07/2012 07:12

Ok, back to the search then. These were the ones I was looking at tiles. I thought the pattern would hide the dirt, but I guess the gloss highlights it. Wondered why they were so cheap!

Cointreau - glad to hear the glossy cupboards aren't going to be a massive problem. I've ordered them already, so too late to change.

I also have a friend with a gloss black floor, and a dp with OCD. Actually, they are both a bit OCD. That family's life is ruled by the ruddy floor. Their teenagers are constantly being kept in to polish the smears etc. It's like a household god they all worship.

Though they did have a really, really bad row recently, culminating in my friend emptying the bin over the kitchen floor, lying face down on it and swimming through the old chicken bones and potato peelings, while the rest of the family shrieked in horror all around Grin

Just got Karndean. I love it.

I'm not going to go and drop boiling oil on it to check for you, though!

Devora! Grin

That is so funny!

I have abandoned all hope of a glossy floor based on this thread. It will be matt all the way.

I have been reading past threads and have learned that porcelain is harder wearing and less likely to crack that ceramic. I've found a couple of tiles I like online, so will head to the shops to have a look in person over the next couple of days.

I really need to ensure that the tiles I choose will be easy to clean and not be the bane of my life - I hate my current tiles so much, I can't bear to think of getting a new floor I also despise.

KingThistle - I have Karndean in the rest of the downstairs, and I also will not be testing out my theory!

Grin at swimming in the rubbish...,

Taking notes on kitchen flooring, as may be doing mine soon. Definitely want 'hide the dirt' flooring (slattern)

I have decided on matt porcelain tiles, and think I have found some that will hide the dirt well. Here they are

I looked at them in the shop with my choice of wall tile, cabinet colour and work surface, and I think they will fit in well. Although they are matt, they have a sheen to them, almost like petrol. I think I will be able to get away with not washing the floor every day!
