hob in "L" shape of kitchen

We're about to get divorced planning an extension...

Big kitchen, big enough for 6 person dining table plus the cooking area.

I want to make an L shape across the "working half" of the kitchen to act as an implied barrier - am fed up of nearly scalding people because I did not know they were behind me as I cooked!

I really, really, really, want to put the gas hob into the L bit. That way I could cook and chat to people - I don't much like being stuck talking to the wall a la Shirley Valentine.

Anyone done it?

Hubby thinks it's an idiotic idea. But, he does no cooking.

I'd fit a breakfast bar behind the hob, so the back of it was protected from passers by self-igniting from the flames.

It would look vagely like this - sort of:[[http://www.howdens.com/product-range/kitchen-collection/kitchen-families/burford/burford-grey/like this breakfast bar but built up higher and extending out so people could sit at it and not get scalded]

Anyone done this?

What did you do about an extractor fan?

Or, is it a really stupid idea?

Sorry, about to get divorced

The above looks a little hysterical. Which, come to think about it, is exactly how I feel when we "chat" about our options...

Sounds good to me.

I'm planning a new kitchen soon and will have an L shaped b/fast bar - but have decided against having the hob sharing the b/fast bar.

Instead I will have the hob halfway along - I reckon that I can stand in the working part of the kitchen and cook and still turn and chat to friends/family.

That way I can share a glass of wine and face my friends (bit like at a table)in the bits between the actual cooking.

If that makes sense?

No, I think it's better with the bottom bit of the L is better for while you're chopping/dishing up etc. I spend more time doing that than standing in front of the hob stirring.. The hob goes away from there along the long bit of the L.

It's much easier to pass stuff over to the breakfast bar when you don't have to avoid burning yourself on the hob.
