What age is a mid height cabin bed suitable for dc?

Youngest dd is nearly 4. Her bedroom is the tiny box room. At present she still sleeps in her cot bed which was converted into a junior bed, she has about 1 year at most before she is too tall for it.

Her room is so tiny that once she has a proper single bed no other furniture will fit in her room- even if we get the 'shorty' type.

So I have been looking at the all in one cabin beds with some drawers, shelves and a desk underneath- the mid height type with 3 steps up.

Does anyone have any experience of young dc sleeping in these? I am mainly concerned about her falling out.

I had this one in mind: www.next.co.uk/x501196s1#950633x50

Thanks

Its nice isn't is MadcapLady- although I've just read quite a few reviews which say the bed is good quality, but the drawers and cupboard are not... and that it took 6 hours to build Shock.

So might look for a similar bed from another supplier!

Actually any recommendations from other MNers on a budget of approx £500 (for the package, not just the bed) would be appreciated!!!

Thanks

My 3 year old DD is in a mid sleeper. No problems with falling out but she never came close to falling out of her cot bed either. Her mid sleeper has a 'lip' which would make falling out difficult. They're a great space saver.

Stannwigg · 25/07/2012 07:38

My DD was in one from 4.5 - I was worried too but she inherited it off her DB when we swapped rooms around. She's been absolutely fine - only thing she struggles with a bit are the steps, as they're built into it, so we have an Ikea step next to it.

My Dd has been in her cabin bed since aged 4. It came from Argos and is a princess castle design with a tent underneath, optional slide but to her annoyance her bedroom isn't big enough.

She never fell out but it was a pita to change the sheets when she was sick once.

The Next bed looks lovely but I would recommend Argos they do something very similar and are cheaper.

Have you considered second hand, they often come up in my area as children particularly girls decide after 3 years that they want a normal grown up bed!

WhereMyMilk · 25/07/2012 10:16

DS has had one since he was 5 and loves it.

The Next one if you go and see it is a bit cheapy looking and drawers flimsy.

We got one from The Great Little Trading Company. We got the Reece mid sleeper. They have a sale at the mo. It is fab, esp the back bit which is high with shelving for night light, drinks, books etc.

It did take rather a long time to put together, but I think that's so for all of them. Though I understand M&S do it for you if you buy theirs! :)

DSS has been in his cabin bed since he was 4.5 and LOVES it. We got it from Dreams, I think it was about £360 plus be bought a mattress and it's VERY solid. It has a pull out desk and chair underneath so we're hoping it'll last him for a while.

TheBabeWithThePower · 25/07/2012 11:00

my ds has had one for the last 4 months and he's 3.5, so moved into it shortly after his third birthday. it has a bar (as they all do) and he's not been close to falling out. He LOVES it.
I got mine on ebay (brand new), they have some good quality and reasonable beds on there.

GnocchiNineDoors · 25/07/2012 11:02

Ooh Im glad you are all saying 4ish as when DD outgrows her cotbed this is what I had planned for her room.

marquesas · 25/07/2012 11:32

My youngest went straight from a cot to a cabin bed as it was what I already had and it would have been daft to buy a new bed. I can't remember exactly but it would have been at about 2.

It would be pretty hard to fal out of as it has sides higher than the depth of the mattress.

It's one from Thuka www.thuka.co.uk/ and the quality is really good. I've had it a while though so don't know if they are still as good.

exexpat · 25/07/2012 11:40

DD had one from age 4 - it's about waist-height for me, and came with a slide down plus playhouse curtains underneath and castle-type arrangement on top. She doesn't have the play bits on now, but is still sleeping in it now she's 9. Ours came from Tesco and I think cost around £250.

GnocchiNineDoors · 25/07/2012 12:02

Also, daft as it may sound but if they have one from a young age they just learn how to climb and get down from.it like they would a normal.bed right?

amazonianwoman · 25/07/2012 12:29

DS went into his when he was just 3, he loved it. We have Flexa beds which can convert from normal beds to mid height or high! And then back again! Not cheap but fantastic quality and much more sturdy than eg Argos (friend has this, it is wobbly and on its last legs after about 3 years)

You can often get Flexa beds or the components to raise them to mid height on eBay. Or you can have my mid height legs and ladder cos we've finished with them Grin

kitsmummy · 25/07/2012 12:29

We had one a few years ago for DS from aged 4 and it was great! It had built up sides, from Mothercare, the equivalent of this one. I don't think you'd have any problems with it (was v solid too)

GnocchiNineDoors · 25/07/2012 12:42

Oh my word this one is amazing Grin

I've just had a look online - ours is the Hampshire Cabin from Dreams, it's on sale at £299 at the moment (sorry, on phone, can't link...). I'd say it was definitely worth the money - and it's the same size as a standard single so can be used for adults too :)

AnotherTeacherMum · 25/07/2012 15:53

Thanks so much for all the replies- I'm checking out the recommendations now.

Think I will do it sooner rather than later as there seem to be some good sales about :)

We have a cresta scallywag bed at mid height for our 4 year old. It has wide ladder steps which my 20 month old can manage and the option to make it even higher when j is a bit older. We love it and have got the matching starter bed for my younger daughter, in time they will both have high level cabin beds.

anklebitersmum · 26/07/2012 09:49

My youngest has had a midi-bed since she came out of her cot at 2. Bought her a flexa bed, very sturdy and safe, with 'proper' steps, not thin little bars.
Never had any falling out issues.
Should qualify that it totally depends on how agile and confident your DC is, we went for it as the middle two have midi's (stompa) and she was up and down on theirs with absolutely no trouble.

Worth checking e-bay for second hand beds (and adding new matress) as you'll save a fortune on brand new price for flexa and stompa. Plus you might get lucky and find one whose nipper didn't like it Grin

We have exactly the same situation. 2yo ds is in the box room. It is L shaped as there is a big cupboard built over the stairs. I presume underneath the cupboard is a wedge shape where the stairs are. When ds grows out of his toddler bed we intend to demolish the cupboard & have a cabin bed built in with storage under it. We thought we'd buy one & a joiner could rehash it where there is no room on the floor for 1-2 of the legs -it would have to be fastened to the wall I think
