Bathroom Styling - Black and White 1930s look

We have a 1930's semi which we are renovating and need decide tiles for the bathroom over the next week or so. Have gone for a clean lines look and want to give a nod to the 1930s character of the house which I love.

So this is the sink/loo www.bathstore.com/products/bathroom-suites/euro-mono
Have double ended bath which will also have a shower over it.
These will be the taps www.homesupply.co.uk/twyford-rival-monobloc-basin-mixer-tap=RL5526CP.htm

Room is 8' x 6' or there abouts.

Having a dilemma with the tiling. I want something that will not date, but also not look to dull, so was thinking large brick proportioned tiles (not metro - scared will look too busy and have a big fear they are soooo fashionable at the moment that they will date really, really quickly) - and thinking of having them laid in a brick laid pattern IYSWIM. Then a black border (v thin) then one brick further up a fatter black line and then white the rest of the way up. Am only going to tile 2 walls.

So far so dull? The plan is to zuzz it up with
brightly coloured accessories - towels/soap/candles etc. Later can also go wild on the wall paint if I am feeling brave.
The question is, will the all horizontal tiles look "updated 30s IYSWIM) or just dated and old fashioned - everything seems to be either metro tiles or vertical panels of mosaic.

Am I being dull? Or sympathetic to the house? Unimaginative? Or sylishly pragmatic (timeless tiling with the ability to ring the changes with accessories)?

Please help.

I think it sounds great. Stick with black accessories, and use as much chrome as you can. I wouldn't put brightly coloured accessories, stick with black, white and chrome.

If you haven't already bought your loo and taps, go and look on plumbworld, I just bought a loo from there which looks absolutely identical to the one on the left for £129 and both basin & bath mixer taps again, very similar style for about £48 each. The taps and loo are great!

PS I don't work for them, I just had a really tight budget and spent a very long time researching to make the most of it.

Sounds lovely - I like black and white. I don't think you need the brightly coloured accessories.

It sounds lovely. I think it would be good with really bright pink towels, bubble bath etc.

Or go with lots of mirrored details and forget the bright colour.

Ohhh good....so am not going to look "out of touch" by not going vertical or mosaic?
Liking the accessories suggestions...

I am very into 1930s stuff at the moment and think it sounds fab. Like the mirrored accessories suggestion for a bit of sparkle. I think other options with colour would be (a) something very refined and powdery to contrast with the black and white eg lilac and silvery things or (b) a kind of gentleman's club idea with black, natural tan and bone colours. And maybe potted ferns if you have room?

What is on the floor?

FishfingersAreOK · 25/07/2012 09:12

Probably slate effect kardean (sp)....partly as I like the slate looking floor (but don't want actual stone in the bathroom) and partly cos I am lazy, it will look OK and I am sick to the back teeth of bloody flooring choices...I know in some way black and white tiles would look more in keeping but DH thinks that would be "too much" and am tending to agree.
