Is this too much?

The wall at the front of our house needs rebuilding; it's been leaning towards the pavement since we before we bought the house, but tbh I think the only reason it hasn't fallen down is because it leans up against a telegraph pole - which in itself is a problem.

Anyway I got a quote from a builder I found through rated people and it came in at £1100 not incuding skip hire, which he said we would also need. The price is for a wall 15 bricks by 16, double width (this is to replace the current wall) and another double brick width section going ata right angle from the other wall and up alongside the steps to the front door. It would be (pretty much) the same size as the first wall, but the steps take out half of that.

I asked for red bricks to match the house, which he didn't think were a good idea, though no reason given for this Hmm

Anyway, what do you think - is £1100 a bit steep for this? I was just shocked and had expected about £500 (never having had this type of work done before)

Sounds about right to me - bricks are expensive ( make sure you see a sample of what he is going to use). You can look at Jewsons or similar to check but with a double layer you'll need a few.

Bricklaying also takes a while - did he let you know how many days he thought it would take?

What is on your side of the wall? air or soil? What I mean is does the builder have to clear and dig before replacing or not.

Price the bricks yourself, allow for muck and then think about how many days work they will have to do. If you say £300 for the materials (min) then 4 days work at £150 / day get you to a grand easily but if it is only 2 days work then the price is very different.

However, this isn't my area of expertise and I would definitely be getting more quotes. Have you tried MyHammer or MyBuilder, I've used both in the past.

Good luck

Thank you for your replies.

It's soil on our side of the wall, but he'd asked us to dig that away from the wall before he started so may as well have been air.

Have had a look at bricks on a couple of websites, but there are so many I don't know where I am with them! There is a builders' shop down the road from us so I might have a walk down tomorrow and ask how much bricks would cost for the job.

I spoke to the builders working at our next door neighbours today. They are planning on rebuilding their half of the wall next week and have said they'll put a quote through the door / come and talk to me about a price for doing our half at the same time, so I might be able to get it done through them instead.
