Hello

I can't bear to look at them anymore I have two hideous chests of pine drawers which I am determined to paint this Summer hols. Thought I would go for off white/cream colour but am unsure whether to gloss or matt...anyone got any good ideas?

Cheers

Farrow & Ball eggshell matt! You'll be glad you did.

A friend painted hers with a greeny colour then over the top with a sort of teal and rubbed it down so it showed through in a distressed sort of way. Looks great.

If you want a nearly-matt and slightly distressed finish I totally recommend Annie Sloan paints which are idiot-proof and everything I paint with them, however fast and clumsily, looks amazing. If you go down the F&B eggshell route you'll need to do a bit of faffing about with sanding and priming etc before you paint but the Annie Sloan stuff you can slop straight on. You do have to wax it afterwards with their wax, but it's easy, soft stuff and can be wiped on with a j-cloth.

I have tried eggshell and regular matt emulsion (both Fired Earth) and wouldn't recommend them. Lovely stuff for walls and woodwork but the finish just didn't look right on furniture. I think you have to be quite good with a brush (or better than me anyway) to get eggshell to look neat.

Eggshell or satinwood. Craig & Rose (avail at B&Q) has some lovely colours, and Crown Period range also has some nice colours.
