How high to tile? (Kitchen - sink next to cooker)

Our sink will be next to our cooker.

I want to avoid this look : www.higham.co.uk/images/Wandsworth-700w.JPG

ie tiles low down on one level and then a big mass of them above the cooker.

plus my SIL who is an interior designer says tiles looker neater all on one level

There will be open shelves above the sink, aligned with the bottom of the extractor fan cupboard.

But if I keep them all on one level I'm going to have a huge expanse expense

What did you do?

I have a low line of tiles from sink to cooker, so no big mass above the cooker. Cooking splats get wiped off the wall if they splat higher than the tiles! Looks neat.

Great - thank you - I think that's what we will go for but I can't find any photos of that anywhere - it seems everyone tiles all the way up.

We previously had nothing at all (just paint) so I'm not worried about maintenance.

How high do your tiles go Mrs?

Four tiles high, tiles similar size to the ones in the photo you linked to.

Am hoping to get www.firedearth.com/white-17413

which are 7.5cm high.

Am dithering about whether to put 3 or 4 rows of tiles.

Will be getting the tiles in the UK so don't want to order too few.

Have just measured, my tiles are 7.5cm high as well, but are plain white rectangular. Splashback is 31cm high in total. I think the decision whether to put 3 or 4 rows will depend on the proportions of your kitchen, we have quite high ceilings so 4 rows look better than 3, 3 rows looks a bit stingey iykwim! You could cut some cardboard templates out and stick them to the wall and see what looks better?

The tiles you linked to are lovely, I'm hoping to change mine to something like this some time in the future, I think with a small tiled area I can probably get away with being bolder.

Thank you, you are very kind to measure for me!

We have terracotta tiles on the floor and will be having yellow/ochre on the walls so we are going for white to go with the units.

I LOVE those Scaramonte tiles, I fell in love with them in the Fired Earth catalogue when it first came but I think we have too much going on in the kitchen to fit them in Sad

Hi,

I have noticed you said your cooker was next to sink. We will be remodelling our kitchen and would like to move the cooker next to the sink, some forums suggest that this is not allowed for safety reasons but I cannot find any regulations about this.

Does anyone know anything about having your cooker next to the sink?
