Gas or Induction?

Redoing kitchen,

I have been drooling over lovely stainless steel 5 burner gas hobs with the big burner to the side not in the centre like this
but talking to a kitchen designer guy this evening he was quite pushy about the benefits of induction hobs - price of gas, safety, efficiency etc I know my current (expensive) pans are not suitable for induction hobs, will I really save the increased cost of the hobs, and new pans, by using electricity rather than gas, and using it more efficiently?

Has anyone fitted an induction hob and wished they'd stuck with gas?

Thank you

I would always go for gas. I don't know about induction hobs but having had electric in the past (when we weren't on the gas network) the main problem is that it doesn't cool down straight away - so you never simmer properly. With a flame it responds instantly. Hope that helps Smile

I have recently moved over from gas to induction. It's fantastic and more responsive than gas. Heats up and cools down very quickly. I really liked gas before but am delighted with this and wouldn't go back.

what lies did he tell you about price of gas cf. price of electricity?

is the designer planning to sell you an induction hob? what will it cost?

Both - I had 2 dominos so 2 of each

induction is fab for boiling/simmering

gas is great for frying

I am moving from gas to induction but it's a false economy if you have to change all your pans. I'm doing it cos I like the look of them and they come recommended - am sourcing my own though

When I read your thread title I thought it was about childbirth, in which case I would have said Gas. Grin

However we've moved recently from a Gas hob to Induction and it's great, very responsive, really easy to keep clean. It cools down really quickly so safe. Having been a huge fan of gas in the past, I wouldn't go back now..

I love induction too, also I feel it's safer when dc are cooking as no flame ( had an episode when set fire to my shirt with a gas ring, when not concentrating on the phone once). However if you are prone to power cuts, then possibly may go with gas. Actually, no, I'd still go with induction. I checked all my pans, and some did work with induction even though I had them before induction jobs were even invented, so don't assume they all have to go.

Moved for gas to induction about a year ago and love induction for all reasons metioned above.

Get an induction hob with different size rings. Mine are all the same and it's not ideal when using bigger pot, that said, still cooks fine.

Grin bluestringpudding - maybe the name is why I'm resisting it so much!

Lots of arguments in favour and positive stories, both here and in RL, it makes sense, especially as safer for DC, and to use electricity as we have solar panels - but I think it will be one of the first corners to be cut when the budget starts to make decisions for me

I don't have any experience of induction, but... our fan oven has just gone bang. So I am very thankful that the job is gas, so we are still able to cook. (thank god for the convection microwave so we can still bake too).

This might not make any difference to your decision, but just a thought...

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 23/07/2012 08:56

Grr... hob not job!

SkiBumMum · 23/07/2012 08:57

Was persuaded to induction and love it too.

Moved from gas to induction when going of mains gas and don't miss it for a minute. Apart from safer, cost effective and cleaning, we also chucked the electric kettle, meaning more space. If you have solar panels, it might tip the scales - but check your angle and solar output at the time you're cooking first. If they're facing due south or south-east, you probably won't have a lot of output when dinner time comes around

Have both so effectively domino hobs - a Flexinduction hob plus a very powerful gas wok burner alongside. I couldn't bring myself to abandon gas since I do a lot of stirfries so thought why not have both - I'm designing it after all - really love it. Buying a set of new pans is nothing in the scheme of installing a new kitchen! I have Circulon Infinite pans from Amazon.

Love my induction. Very fast response both to heat and to cool. I also love that that you can set each ring separately eg I know that 7 is exactly the right setting for pasta/ peas to boil without boiling over or going off the oil. So no constant readjusting. Also on mine you can set each zone to turn off after a set time. So I can start a spag bol, turn it down to 2 to simmer and set it to turn off after 20 mins while I go and do something else or even leave the house.

It's sooo easy to clean as nothing burns on and because it's flat it also doubles as extra work surface if you're baking or doing anything that needs more room (eg unpacking shopping bags)
