50 Shades of Grey paint? Would you? Have you?

I'm thinking about painting our hall, stairs, landings and entrance hall in a pale grey. I'd love to F&B it, but it's over three storeys and I'm pretty sure our budget just won't stretch. So it's going to have to be b&q/homebase/ownbrand whatever.

Woodwork would be white.

Grey - good idea? terrible? Anyone found a pale (and cheap) grey they love?

My dh painted our hall and sitting room in a grey called 'silver mist' from homebase, all the woodwork is white.

I wasn't sure until I saw it done, now I adore it.

I've just used Dulux Clouded Sky - it's got blue tones but in some lights it's a very clean soft grey. Pretty close to F&B Borrowed Light. I also think Dulux Polished Pebble looks good, Dulux Just Walnut is a warmer grey/taupe and there are lots of fans of Dulux Egyptian Cotton on here.

Def not a terrible idea. Terribly fashionable, dahling, actually! Grin

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 18/07/2012 18:25

Our living room is 2 shaded of grey. 3 if you include the charcoal sofas. We like it.

LynetteScavo · 18/07/2012 18:26

I would.

DH says no, so am stuck with magnolia. Sad

GrassIsntGreener · 18/07/2012 18:28

I thought I would hate it when dp chose grey for our bedroom. As it turns out, it's very warm and lovely. It has blue undertones. I think it's picking the right shade that's important.

Sinkingfeeling · 18/07/2012 19:24

I would - I love certain shades of grey and it's oh so very fashionable at the moment. Grin

LaGuerta · 18/07/2012 19:28

Brushed Clay from Crown has just gone up in our house. Looks very good in a room that is very hot and sunny in the evenings (obviously not this Summer), as it calms it down. As the name suggests it has slight brownish undertones.

culturemulcher · 18/07/2012 19:36

Lot's of great suggestions already. Tapir I'll check out Silver Mist, and Fresh Clouded Sky sounds good as I like Borrowed Light.

I'd like to stay away from a browny grey LaGuerta, but thanks for the suggestion - I think it's going to be tricky as one of the hallways is dark and narrow and I'd like a grey that's not too cold looking.

I'll also check out Just Walnut and Egyptian Cotton - both sound good.

Of course, I'm also wondering if a pale grey is a bit urban for our countryside house? Confused

Every single grey we tried in our south facing kitchen looked blue. We tried every shade known to mankind. Our kitchen is now a soft green..........

angel1976 · 18/07/2012 20:45

Can I hijack this thread?!!! When we moved in, our bathroom is white with one dark purple feature wall I finally got round to whitewashing it. But now has to decide on a colour for it. It's a big family bathroom but quite dark and has fake black granite top for the wash basins and also a mahoosive free-standing bath that has been painted black on the underneath of it iykwim? I really want grey to match the colour scheme already in there but have no idea what grey. Arghhhh!!! Any advice? Thanks. Thanks

crumpet · 18/07/2012 20:52

Dulux Potters Clay is nice - not too blue

Devora · 19/07/2012 00:08

My living room and hall is F&B strong white - a very pale grey, not too brown or too blue. It's so pale that on its own it looks white, but next to white it goes a beautiful soft grey. So colour-matching that would be a safe choice.

F&B Blackened is in a couple of our rooms. It's grey in some lights, pale blue in others. Really lovely colour.

I've got Homebase Putty in the kitchen and bathroom. A much browner grey, a sort of cool greige.

All beautiful and easy to live with. i think grey is the best wall colour myself - I'd use it everywhere.

trixymalixy · 19/07/2012 00:11

Our hall, stairs, landing etc is painted in pebble mosaic by dulux, I love it.

The living room in my previous flat was painted in it by mistake, but I loved the colour so much I used it in a barroom and also the hall, stairs landing etc.

Mandy21 · 19/07/2012 08:51

We also have grey for our hall, stairs and landing. We have "Dusk" from Homebase's Sanctuary range - very pale, which we needed as the hall was potentially quite dark. Teamed it with white wood work and a wooden floor. Looks lovely.

culturemulcher · 19/07/2012 10:47

Thanks everyone - I'm off to check out Homebase's Putty and Dusk (there's a homebase very close to us so these are excellent suggestions Wink ).

Devora our mantelpiece is in F&B Blackened and it is a lovely colour.

trixy I love the idea of you accidentally painting your living room. How did that happen? Grin

DH went to get the paint and came back with the wrong colour. 10 litres of the wrong colour!! It was half painted by the time I came home, so no point in starting again and we wouldn't have got our money back as it was DH's mistake.

It worked out ok as the colour really grew on me, and was much copied by friends. Just as well as we still had a spare 5 litres when we moved a couple of years later!!!! When it came to painting such a huge area I used the colour again as I didn't want to make a massive expensive mistake and greys were in all the house magazines.

The original paint was bought about 10 years ago!! I'm a trendsetter me!

craftynclothy · 19/07/2012 12:14

Our living room is mostly grey and so is our bedroom. They are slightly different shades (and we ended up with the living room stuff on the bedroom and vice versa cos dh mixed the tubs up). They were both just B&Q own brand - one was Light Rain and the other was Grey hints. One is a little paler than the other but I can't remember which way round it was!

CuddyMum · 19/07/2012 13:58

Ooh I fancy grey now too. Just need to sell my house and buy a new one!

culturemulcher · 19/07/2012 17:12

trixy ahhh, that explains it. Judging by your and crafty's experience, I should keep DH well away from Homebase...

I have a light silvery grey wall in our bedroom to lift the silver and black curtains and bedding.

I like it although I was worried it would look too much like a boudoir . Glad to hear its fashionable - ours is 3 years old!

spotty26 · 19/07/2012 19:41

Colour match F and B at Johnsons... Cornforth White is an excellent mid grey...looks like this in my hallcolporter.tumblr.com/post/21723105054/lantern-bore

culturemulcher · 19/07/2012 19:50

That is a beautiful hallway, spotty.

Which is the Cornforth White (or aka Cornforth White), above or below the dado rail?

OP posts:
spotty26 · 19/07/2012 19:57

Oops sorry, the bottom is Cornforth White, top Wimborne White.

Lougle · 20/07/2012 18:04

We have Dulux Polished Pebble in our lounge on 3 walls, with Blue Reflection on the remaining wall. It's very tranquil.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 20/07/2012 18:08

Sounds nice to me.

For a slightly different feel, how about a neutral with a warm tinge of (vvvv pale) mocha? We have Dulux Cocoa Blush 6 in hallway, upstairs landing and up the stairs as well as in living area, and it's neutral enough not to clash with anything but gives a slightly warmer feel, while still looking quite elegant (I hope!).
