Sealing previously stained wooden support beams

Help!

We've just had the roof replaced on our lean-to conservatory. The original roof was held up by nasty looking wooden beams. They have been stained a dark orange colour, but the knots tend to "leak" what looks like crystals of dried sap. All the middle supports have been replaced with nice new ones, but the base of the frame has been left in and the new roof has been laid on top! So our lovely new roof has this awful, dark orange frame around it on the inside. :(

Assuming I have strangled our builder for the state of the carpet and for using our table as a work bench to saw things on, how can I go about fixing this myself? Grin

I think if I just paint it, the orange will seep through. Is there anything I can to treat and/or seal the wood so it will stay white and flat when painted?

TIA
