Hello Glaswegians, any ideas on where to live in Glasgow?

We're hoping to relocate to Glasgow. We'll be renting when we get there first and our budget would be around £700/800 per month. We've got one DS who is 2 and plan for an other wee one soonish. We need at least 2 bedrooms and ideally we'd like a house with a garden.
I've had a scout about on S1 Homes and most of the places that fit our budget and criteria seem to be in the Parkhouse, Thornliebank, Crookston areas. I also saw a couple in Lenzie and Newton Mearns
I've lived in Glasgow when I was young, footloose and fancy free and I loved it but obviously now that I've got a family and a proper(ish) job I'm looking for something different. I also don't know the Southside or much outside the centre at all.

What are these areas like for families? Are they safe and are they handy for the shops and the buses etc. Any idea what the schools are like?

There are a few properties in clarkston though. Clarkston is nice. Great transport links, schools and even some shops.

I'm looking for a flat in Glasgow on a similar budget. You could get a nice garden flat or a flat with a balcony or patio. I know most of Glasgow quite well, will post some links when I put dd to bed.

Oh this is great :) DH is applying for jobs this week so if it all goes well we'll be in Glasgow after Christmas to check out all these suggestions.
Thank you so much for going to this effort, sometimes Mumsnet is fabulous.

I have to say, the rental market moves very very fast so there's probably not a lot of point looking at specific properties until you're actually thinking of moving. I think you could definitely get something nice for that money, we're looking at places under £700 pcm in the city centre and there are loads. ou should maybe decide first what area you'd like to live in. Where did you live before?

Have a Look at hyndland or kelvin dale. In west end so near great bars shops etc but good schools and less suburban than bearsden.

Another vote for East Renfrewshire, so Clarkston, Busby, Giffnock, Eaglesham and N.Mearns.

Rental market will spike at the moment as a lot of people moving into area for catchment. Very strict catchment areas for schools and nurseries.

Good facilities for kids, some nice bars and restaurants, the only Wholefoods market in Scotland, most of the people are friendly. Newton Mearns, not so much... Annoys me that they insist that they're from 'The Mearns'. [Wink]

Greetings! My husband and I are moving with our two little girls to Glasgow next summer from the U.S. I've never been to Glasgow and was looking for recommended areas to live. He will be working with the University of Glasgow and we will be without car. Things we'd love access to easy public transportation, markets, parks. We'll prob have around £700/mo for rent. Any recommendations?

sleepyhead · 03/10/2013 21:19

Hi emhauss. I'd have a look at property in the West End. Hyndland, Dowanhill, Hyndland etc. Easy walking distance of the University and central so good transport links. Plenty parks such as the Botanic Gardens, Kelvingrove etc. Byres Rd is good for shops & cafés.

Property is flats in the main rather than gardens. Schools are fine. (imo, the East Renfrewshire mob would pooh pooh Glasgow City school Hmm Wink). Plenty private as well as state if that's what you prefer.

sleepyhead · 03/10/2013 21:22

One of those Hyndlands should read Hillhead, and it's Glasgow schools - obv we have more than one Grin

ubik · 03/10/2013 21:28

YY to the West End + Kelvindale

People are sniffy about the schools in Glasgow but Hillhead Primary, Notre Dame, Hyndland, Broomhill primaries have good reputations and Hillhead High School is on the up.

MsUumellmahaye · 03/10/2013 21:38

crookston is nice, affordable and handy for everywhere, if the above suggestions are a bit pricey.

Hi,
It is just about possible to rent within walking distance of the University but you will be competing with students for accommodation although people without HMOs would be delighted to rent to you.
In this convenient area with nearby schools and parks, expect one bathroom, a sparsely furnished tenement flat and two bedrooms.
I would look at the area near to the newly refurbished Notre Dame primary/Elie street nursery, if your children are of that age.
Catholic schools in the UK are under the umbrella of the state and no fees are paid.
You will be able to walk to everything from there and will have a good experience. I can offer more suburban ideas if you like, that would give you a small house and garden.
Glasgow is very wet. Try and bear this in mind when making choices.

Sorry, I seem to have killed this thread. Maybe you should have started your own thread, op.
You are too early to be looking at rentals but on rightmove there is a traditional flat with 2 beds for £675. Very close to University and schools, walking distance.
The harbour developments are more modern and perhaps more American, but they are further out and not as convenient. You could live in Laurence street quite happily with no car. Good transport links by bus train and underground but pretty quiet.

Hi there, xkittyx mentioned that some Thornliebank areas are not so nice. I'm wondering which ones?
