You need a Safe registered gas engineer - dont attempt to do it!

Get a professional gas safe registered engineer in. This is absolutely not a job that should ever be attempted as DIY.

nocake · 16/07/2012 18:13

Is it the cooker that was already installed? Have they just disconnected the gas hose from the bayonet fitting? If they have then it's safe to simply reconnect it.

However, if it's a new cooker or you're not sure why it's been disconnected (might it have been faulty?) or you're in an doubt get a gas safe engineer to reconnect it.

YOu should get a registered person to do it. If not, you're risking not only your lives and home, but those living within quite a large area.

AmberLeaf · 16/07/2012 18:19

It is an incredibly simple job that you will pay in the region of £70ish for a gas safe person to do.

I've done it several times. I was shown how to do it safely and it passed the safety check I had british gas do a little while after when they came for something else.

I think now they also chain them to the wall.

bacon · 16/07/2012 20:22

I wouldnt pay £70 for that you can find a registered fitter to pop over after work for £20. Most people know a plumber/engineer who can find someone who can do this on way home outside work time.

For your intrest, it is ILLEGAL for anyone who is not Gas Safe registered to work with any form of gas connections even bottled gas, a gas safe registered engineer MUST be used and must provide documentation to certify the work has been carried out properly. Any DIY attempt to work with gas connections or appliances could invalidate your house insurance.

iloveACK · 16/07/2012 21:26

The reason it's illegal is because it is so dangerous - please use a Gas Safe Registered Engineer.

AmberLeaf · 16/07/2012 22:44

Its not illegal to simply connect the existing pipe into female bayonet fitting.

Actually fitting a new pipe onto a new cooker (they don't come with pipes anymore) has to be done by a competant person.

As the OP doesn't seem to know anything about it I would say pay To have it done.

MrsJohnMurphy · 17/07/2012 00:53

Depends, if both ends of the pipe have the right connectors, then pop one into the other and you are away. Have had to have the gas people fit the right connectors into the pipe for 2 houses now, about £70 ffs. The people before must have had electric ovens?

ClueLessFirstTime · 17/07/2012 08:45

thanks all. will get someone in. I never had a gas hob before (can you tell :) )
it is a used cooker, was in the house we moved into. it was just disconnected, there is a pipe/hose and a connecting thingy at the back of the stove.
