Can I have wooden floors and wooden countertops in my kitchen?

Will this look weird and like too much wood? Should I try to match them up or would a bit of contrast be better.

If it's relevant, I'm going for a traditional look - probably cream cabinets and a French dresser.

We had this dilemma: wanted wood floors and wooden kitchen. Google Images was great - I needed to see what it might look like. I couldn't find a good combination so we went for something else.

So from here

I have a wooden floor, wooden furniture ( some painted and some stained) and soem wooden worktops ( wood on island and granite elsewhere).i also have an oak beam above the Aga and four wooden doors with quite large facings. Its quite traditional . Photos on my profile so you can see

Wooden counter top warning. They are a bastard to look after. We went for it, and I would never do it again. Near the sink they are all discoloured and look awful now. I wish I had gone for Corian or granite.

I have oak flooring (engineered sp? boards) and oak worktops with cream cabinets, the walls are a pale greyish green. I love it, but it is a big room

Treblesallround · 13/07/2012 11:36

Yes marge, I am obsessive about never leaving them wet, they do take a lot of looking after

MrsTrellis, thanks for the links - very useful.

Kristina, your kitchen is beautiful. I love the oak beam above the Aga. Sadly, our kitchen is much smaller but no reason why I aspire to a similar style if not effect!

Marge, my mother has warned me off wooden countertops too but I'm not crazy on granite. I will bear the warnings in mind though and look at the options as my DH is quite careless and I bet it will be source of endless arguments.

Trebles, your kitchen sounds lovely.

Another one here considering wooden floor with wooden worktop, my question is more about the cupboard doors.

Initially I was looking at Ikea cream/off white shaker style doors, with glazed doors for the wall cuboards, but then someone recommended DIY kitchens and they do curved deep pan drawer which I really like, but not the glazed wall cabinet doors. Will it look messy if I have the base cupboards a light green, and the wall cabinets cream? Or should they all be matching cream?

Am thinking of mainly light cream walls, with 1 strong red wall, which the wall units would go on.

Please advise

We had wooden worktops when we moved in. They went black all around the sink and you couldn't put a cup of coffee down without using a coaster. They were horrible and very unsightly. We replaced them with Getacor and haven't regretted it. My response to a question of wooden worktops is avoid, avoid, avoid. They look fabulous when new, but don't stay looking new for long.

My wooden island worktop is matt varnished and it still looks good after 3.5 years.its the type of varnish they use in bars. Only A few small dents from toddler banging cup. But i only have a small prep sink on the island so dont have dishes draining on it. I dont need to use coasters or placemats ( unless the dish has come out the oven or pan off the stove)

How messy/spilly/hectic are you and your family out of ten? The nearer to ten, the less you should consider it I reckon.

I have a super chi chi aunt and her wooden worktops look fab. But if you're the type to spill red wine down your tshirt as you are absent-mindedly draining potatoes onto the worktop, forget it.

We have oak flooring, oak countertops and cream gloss cupboards - I absolutely love it and think the wood looks lovely.
Our wood has lasted really well and we aren't particularly obsessive about wet things on work tops.
I was a bit worried about it at first as never had wooden worktops and had heard a few people say that they are a nightmare, but DH said that if, after a few years, they look awful then you can just sand them down and they look brand new again.

We have karndean dark oaky flooring and dark oak tops with white gloss shaker cabinets - looks fab

KristinaM · 14/07/2012 20:08
