Housebuying étiquette

Hi all, looking for some advice on next moves on a house buy we're involved with...

Found dream home, got our offer accepted and very quickly got a buyer for our own flat. So far, so great. The problem we're up against now is that we're in a longish chain and the people at the top are consistently failing to find a house and are refusing to contemplate going into rented accommodation to get things moving. The people we are buying off are similarly refusing. Meanwhile we're in imminent danger of losing our own buyer as this has been dragging on for months now.

We're in a difficult position to move into rented accommodation owing to children (one of whom is in and out of hospital at the moment), cats and chickens that would have to be accommodated in London during the Olympics so are trying to come up with creative solutions, none of which are guaranteed to succeed.

My question, however, is whether we can be looking at other houses in the meantime? We really want house number 1 but have to be realistic about whether we're actually going to get into it (the owners are by no means desperate to leave). So we've seen another house nearby on the internet that is worth a look, but it is being marketed by the same estate agent that we're dealing with on house number 1.

Is it bad form/ impossible to view the other house without ruining our chances with number 1 house? Any ideas?!

I would simply be honest with the vendors of house 1 (and the agents). Tell them exactly what you've posted here - that you are afraid you will lose your buyer, you can't go into rented with a child in and out of hospital (I wouldn't mention the chickens!) and so unless things move very soon you are going to start looking at alternative properties. That should give them a shove, and if it doesn't, I think you can be excused for looking elsewhere. I think it could actually work in your favour that the other house is with the same agents. The key is to be open about it.
