DIY Kitchens - anyone used them? Good or bad?

Sandgroper · 09/07/2012 14:44

Hi

We are doing large extension and need a new kitchen. So far had a few quotes from Magnet and County Kitchens, both more than DH wants to pay (typical). I really like the colour of the doors at County Kitchens (sort of mushroom).

Friend has ordered a kitchen from DIY Kitchens (yet to be delivered) after doing some research she told me it uses the same factory in Wales as County Kitchens but at a fraction of the price. Not sure if this is true, but it looks the same. Only drawback is you have to design it yourself... Oh and they seem to not have all the stock that County Kitchens does.

Wondering if anyone has used them and are they happy with the product. Did you have any problems with delivery etc? Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I go bonkers!

Thanks

The different levels of customer service are really odd.

HECATE your kitchen looks fab!

I’m envious of your lovely view! I wonder if I can order one with the kitchen? 🤔

Andonandonan · 29/04/2019 09:44

I think the delivery option you choose is key. When we were looking in to reviews etc most of the bad reviews were from people who’d chosen one of the cheaper delivery options.

We had a very good experience with the most expensive delivery option. A couple of bits were damaged / missing but quickly replaced and the kitchen itself is fantastic; definitely better quality for the price than we could have got elsewhere.

DIY Kitchens? - Could not even place my order! Unbelievably BAD service

Below is my review for them, which DIY-K reported and got suspended on Trustpilot - because I did not buy anything from them. Well, I could not finalise my basket and hence no order was placed. Three weeks of really bad communication and misleading "advice"... I am very disappointed with Trustpilot too: they claim that my review is "investigated" for breach of their rules, but no one contacted me (as their rules suggest) since I posted my review (a week has passed by now).

If you do not want to waste your time and get your kitchen project messed-up, just avoid DIY-Kitchens and do not trust Trustpilot!

Disclaimer - I have not bought a kitchen from DIY kitchens but I have used their online services and interacted with their team with the aim of buying the kitchen, but in effect they made every effort for me NOT to place my order

Like many others, judging by MOST RECENT BAD REVIEWS for DIY Kitchens (March-June 2019), I feel that I have to expose them for my very unfortunate experience in... preparing(!) my order: I simply cannot place it because of unbelievably poor communication system with so-called online "tickets", where responses take at least 2 (often more) days, non-existent support on phone, and what's more, the support staff who is supposed to help messing up your basket (being most likely overwhelmed by unbearable workload).

You do not need to read any further - DO NOT TRUST THEIR good PAST REVIEWS ANY MORE - just turn away and look somewhere else!!!

I spent about about a week, mostly nights, designing and planning my kitchen layout in their online planner (a few different variants, comparing prices etc), which is about the only good experience I had with DIY Kitchens... until I turned to preparing my basket and found out that the range I chose (Silsden Alabaster) is not any more available for delivery in time for already planned fitting in the end of July, which at the time would be two months ahead, and which was actually available for delivery wc 8-th of July, as was stated on their website a couple of days earlier.

For those who are keen having ill-spirited "fun" of reading through my hardly "live" recent ticket correspondence with their support, here we are (not from the very beginning, but clear enough; skipping the names - not be as merciless as their support).

Support (last Friday): Good Afternoon,

Thank you for sending over your plan to be checked,

I have taken a look at your plan which looks great although i would just advise for you to amend the below

Will you be using anything between the two 150mm open wall units?

Will you be using anything below the wall uits to the bottom of the plan ?

Other than the above there is nothing else which i would advise for you to amend, Please just let me know if you will still be making amendments to the plan or if you are ready for this to be added to a basket through the main website as you are not able to place an order through the planner.

Kind Regards
[Name]

Me (last Friday): Dear [Name],

Thank you for looking into it!
Regarding your questions about my kitchen design/layout, yes, we do have something in mind for both the (lower-right) corner and the adjacent wall with empty space between the two open shelves. The space by that wall is our sitting/dining area [some details]. The empty space on the wall will be filled with some decorative elements [details].

My main concern right now is what kitchen (door) style/range should I go with, as I have a provisional agreement with my builder to do kitchen fitting on the last week of July. As you probably noticed, the design I created in the online planner is based around the Silsden Painted Alabaster range. When I was creating the design/layout, the earliest delivery date for the Silsden Painted Alabaster range shown on the web-site was in the beginning of July (I think it was wc the 8-th July). However, when I was just about to place my order last Friday, I found out that the dates for many ranges were moved further in time, and Silsden Painted range became unavailable by the end of July. Currently, the delivery dates for the Sildsden Painted start on 26/08/2019 (according to the web-site).

We did come to the showroom and tried to switch the design to the Conistone range, which [another name] helped us with. Unfortunately, after the first iteration of correcting [their] mistakes (in basket ID #1), [they] stopped answering my requests in the ticket [they] created for that basket. On Tuesday I saw that the delivery dates for Silsden Painted moved back to 22/07/2019 (I have two screenshots - taken in the morning and evening). Since [another name] was not replying, I though I could switch back to Silsden in that basket and order, but again unfortunately not all the Conistone items could be auto-converted back to Silsden, so I got stuck with that basket being mostly Silsden with a few Conistone items. Meanwhile the delivery dates for Silsden were again moved forward to 26/08/2019 on Wednesday.

The above explains why I created yet another request for checking my final design in the planner, which brings us back to you looking into it, form scratch again.

By now I have actually created a second basket (ID #2) where I tried to reconstruct [another name]'s Conistone set of units for my design, but I could not find all the items which [another name] somehow managed to convert from Silsden to Conistone, and I cannot remove doors from three wall units that are supposed to be open shelves, i.e. without doors.

I think now we have two options: either to create yet another basket based on your own revision of my design, or take one of the existing baskets and finalise it properly for me to place an order.

Please! - I desperately need an advise as to which range to choose: Silsden Painted Alabaster (my initial preference) or Conistone Alabaster (our second choice)? - Is there any chance for me to get the kitchen in Silsden Alabaster by the end of July? If it is out of question, I would go for Conistone Alabaster with some units converted from the Silsden range.

Many thanks again.
Kind regards
[my name]

On Sunday I tried and fully restored and corrected [another name]'s original basket where one particular unit was a confirmed combination between the two ranges in question, of which I duly informed [name and managers who supposedly were monitoring my tickets].

Support [name] (Monday):
Good Morning [my name],

Thank you for sending over your below support ticket,

I can see you have amended the basket so this is now all in the Coniston kitchen range,

I have spoken with our suppliers although i am afraid we are not able to offer the internal curved doors in the Silsden, They also do not offer the L shaped corner units in this kitchen range so you would need to be looking at a straight corner unit option.

I can confirm the end panels are finished on all sides and edges, If you plan to use the base end panels in place of the dresser end panels this would mean you needing to return the pelmet back to the wall as this will not have a panel to run into so you would just need to increase the quantity of pelmet to two.

We do not drill or fit the handles for you, these will need to be drilled and fitted by your fitter as each person has their own preference.

I have added the Corbels and the flying shelf to your basket for you which you will just need to also check is correct.

Kind Regards
[name]

The result is my basket with a previously confirmed compromise solution is destroyed, and what's more, some units which were (and are! - acoording to the website) readily available in Conistone range suddenly became no more available to order, i.e. I have to redesign my layout, on which I worked for more than a week, accommodating further compromises plus uncertainty as to what unit(s) might become unavailable later on.

Thanks, but NO THANKS
---
I do have all the correspondence and the necessary screenshots and printouts (in pdf format) to fully support this review.

ChequersDog · 11/06/2019 11:25

I can see why trustpilot removed that review.

astonefall · 11/06/2019 14:47

@ChequersDog
You should have had my experience, first, before seeing what you see.

We (my family) were a happy when leaving their showroom, because we were suggested a nice solution and we thought we had everything ready to place an order and just wait for our new kitchen to be fitted, after all the renovations (floor to ceiling) are done by the end of July.

It was only due to my diligence checking the basket that I discovered that half of the units were missing, plus it looked like I could get my design done in my original style of choice, instead of the compromise they suggested, which turned out to be a mistake after all.

Now, after a week spent for design (done by myself) plus two weeks of misleading "clarifications" and "advice", they finally admitted their mistakes. But my kitchen project is still undermined...

Once again: thanks, but NO THANKS.

IncrediblySadToo · 11/06/2019 18:46

Oh.

Where are you going to get your kitchen from now then?

I wanted to use them as most people seem pleased with them and the price is great but they don't have the doors I want (slab wood grain painted) so I'm debating what to do about it now.

astonefall · 12/06/2019 10:06

It doesn't matter for now where I will buy my kitchen.

What matters is that I did not fall in for a much bigger trouble with DIY Kitchens, which was waiting for me if I actually ordered from them.

Because they don't care about their customers' needs, projects and timescales.

IncrediblySadToo · 12/06/2019 14:23

Ah I see. You didn’t actually want to chat, you just wanted to join Mumsnet to rant about a company that’s popular on here....‍🤷🏻‍♀️

astonefall · 12/06/2019 20:42

@IncrediblySadToo

I don't mind chatting :) It's just that right now I am pretty busy... and that is not only at work, as you can imagine, perhaps...

On the other hand I don't see why I should not be "ranting" about wrong-doing company (as of now), even if it used to be a popular one (?) :)

Please note that my posts directly reply the subject of this thread: "DIY Kitchens - anyone used them? Good or bad?"

So, I merely gave here my first-hand very recent experience with DIY Kitchens, which might help other people reading this forum to see what their service entails in terms of helping a customer.

Note also that I cannot and did not comment on the quality of the kitchen units, which might be great indeed... the question remains though: would I (or my builder) want to go through all the hassle(s) that are currently reported by many people in their recent negative reviews for DIY Kitchens? - considering that the support staff is hardly professionally trained or being sympathetic at least.

Sorry but I currently cannot chat about slab doors or any other style of doors, except those I would like to have.

Cheers :)

Please don’t use DIY kitchens they are the worse kitchen company to deal with.
I bought a kitchen from them in June. I have had over 12 deliveries each time damaged or with imperfections in the finish .
It’s now 13 weeks since my first delivery and I am still waiting for doors to be replaced that they sent damaged. I have many photos of this and want to let people know just how bad they are. They refuse to offer any compensation or pay the extra costs we have incurred because of their incompetence

IncrediblySadToo · 26/09/2019 12:13

@Kimnash

😖😢😖😢really?

I was pretty much ready to hit the buy button last week, but they’re about to get some new styles, so I was waiting to see what they were like.

Kimnash · 26/09/2019 15:09

Save your money and your sanity and go elsewhere.
This company is bad news

MoonShadow11 · 26/09/2019 15:57

We were thinking of going to DIY for a kitchen. House purchase is currently in the process so just thinking ahead really. A friend has recently had a DIY kitchen fitted and and had only positive things to say so I’m hoping that’s not a fluke as I’m now wary after the post from kimnash.

IncrediblSadToo do you know when they will be getting the new kitchen styles in?

IncrediblySadToo · 26/09/2019 21:54

@MoonShadow11

Apparently within a month. No idea what style or anything. I wish I did as I need to get mine ordered.

I’ve heard SO many good things about them and only a few bad reviews, so I’m not sure what I’m going to do. I think I’ll see what the new designs are like, as I haven’t been able to find what I want, so I’ll probably take the risk if I like them. tbh I don’t think there’s any guarantee any other suppliers are any better - not even the very expensive companies!

dad2hen · 27/09/2019 13:23

I just got a Dove grey maton kitchen delivered from them. it's only an L shape kitchen and about 30 items ordered.

I haven't fitted it yet and I was worried about the recent reviews, BUT everything has been checked by me and looks like its built really well, painted really well and the delivery people where really nice.

Nothing missing from the order and you do get 10 days to tell them if anything is wrong.

dad2hen · 27/09/2019 13:25
  • not sure if it's been mentioned but apparently the faults where due to a new production line being installed next to old one, they switched old one off and then the new one went wrong resulting in poor quality control and back log of orders, they had to fly people from Italy in to fix it. I ordered mine in June and delivered in August.
IncrediblySadToo · 27/09/2019 13:38

@DadtoHen. Thank you for that. I hope your installation goes well!

MoonShadow11 · 27/09/2019 14:01

Thank you IncrediblySadToo. We will be ready to start looking in around 4-6 weeks so will be interesting to see the new styles. And you’re quite right, there’s no guarantees as there will always be people out there who have had good and bad experiences with the same company.

That’s reassuring dad2hen. Enjoy your new kitchen.

astonefall · 27/09/2019 19:29

Hello everyone,

Just an update from me. We have now Ikea kitchen installed, based on the layout I created for DIY-K, actually using their kitchen planner and then reproducing this design in Ikea's planner, as close as I could.

My ordeal with DIY-K was mostly about concave (inwards curved) doors - at the time I was about to place my order with DIY-K their web-site, and apparently even their internal database, were messed up in terms of the styles/ranges that include or not concave doors. I was really angry at them because it took about 2 weeks to clarify. To start with, they almost mislead me into placing an incomplete (by their mistake) order with a style that would not have concave doors. It all coincided with malfunctioning of their new line in the factory (as mentioned above), which also added confusion about the delivery times for the affected styles (most of them anyway). - Eventually I had to step back and look somewhere else, because I had a strict project plan in mind and did not want to postpone it indefinitely, as it looked to be with DIY-K.

Now I am glad we turned to Ikea and did not buy into concave doors.

  1. In the meantime I learnt that internally curved doors have been discontinued by most of the suppliers as expensive and 'problematic' (possibly in use too).
  1. Ikea has a 365 days return/exchange policy so that one can replace cabinets, units, doors and whatever elements within a year!
  1. Ikea does not make you order any 'minimum kitchen set' (like at least 10 units, as we heard from other suppliers) and there is no 'minimum order sum' to be spent in Ikea (like about £750 with DIY-K)
  1. There is so much decor and fittings you can decide to buy later on, and not necessarily from Ikea, if you are not certain at the time of ordering the main units...

We are very happy now with our Ikea kitchen - everything is in place and works as supposed to. :)

Andy

astonefall · 27/09/2019 19:51

Sorry, forgot: last but not least, Ikea delivers your kitchen as quickly as 3 working days after an order is placed, and takes under £50 for two men delivery to your ground floor or garage (should be easily accessible). Now compare this with DIY-K -starting at £75 for one-man delivery onto your drive-way or public path; do you have enough room there for the pre-assembled kitchen? ;).

Cheers

dad2hen · 28/09/2019 09:42

That's some good points but it's worth remembering IKEA is flat packed and therefore weaker when assembled. Unless you're doing it yourself alot of fitters will charge you a whole day if not longer just to build the cabinets witch greatly outweighs delivery cost. IKEA cabinets also do not have a service gap in the back unless they've recently added this, meaning if you have any pipes on your wall you'll have to get someone to chisel channels and bend pipes back into the wall again costing another days labour.

My friends have a slightly bigger kitchen than me and charged £18k without flooring for a kitchen same as mine from DIY k. I fitted mine myself included floor and soild oak worktops £3800

IncrediblySadToo · 20/11/2019 14:54

@astonefall

I’m glad it’s worked out for you.

I looked at IKEA as I had previously liked some of their kitchens, but there wasn’t anything I liked enough to settle for flat pack and them not having a service void (as @dad2hen said, the cost of labour & or your time makes the saving on the delivery cost null & void. Plus factory building units are stronger.)

£750 with DIY is only for your initial order, you can order extras later if you need to. I think that’s more than reasonable for a kitchen company personally.

I hope you don’t have cause to test Ikea’s 365 day exchange policy.

Anyway Andy, I’m glad you’re pleased with your kitchen 😊

Phil08 · 19/12/2019 12:17

Once they have your cash they are shocking buy somewhere else

minipie · 19/12/2019 14:36

I ordered their Luca matt white units for a utility room (quite a lot, so a small kitchen’s worth) around January. Delivered in May, as I delayed delivery a couple of times. There were no issues at all with mine despite reviews at the time saying there were problems. I used the cheapest delivery service. The only annoyance was the long day delivery window (7am to 10pm from memory).

I wouldn’t rely on their “checking” as I had made one or two errors (eg didn’t include a filler panel at the end of the run) and they didn’t flag this up. But that’s my error not theirs as design is not part of their service.

I looked at Ikea but would have had to spend hours assembling the units (or £ getting my builders to do it). Plus I didn’t like their doors as much.

DIY is only for people who are confident designing, or using an independent designer, but great for those people IME.
