Granite & kitchen tiles

We're on the process of buying a new build & need to make some decisions on the kitchen soon.

We've decided on blonde oak units with star galaxy granite worktop to include upstand, splashback behind hob and windowsill. Should we have tiles above the upstand??

From a practical point of view it makes sense but does it look too fussy? We've looked at cream tiles with a very feint darker cream strip going through it. Would I be constantly repainting if we don't have tiles?

We had similar kitchen in last house. Also had star galaxy there with cream tumbled limestone tiles. Looked great because the granite was shiny and the tiles were not. However, tiles always got splashed behind the cooker, Bolognaise sauce major culprit Nd hard to shift.

In new house we have cooker on central island. Reduces splashing a lot but the sink is against the wall and so we get water splashes. We have pale granite with upstands and no tiles. Have repainted wall 3 times in 7 months.

I would say it would be overkill - either go for upstands or tiles, but not both.

We have granite upstands and splashback, and it is true that the odd splash of sauce gets onto the paintwork. But as long as you use wipeable Kitchen paint you can whip off most stains with a dishcloth. Or touch up small sections with leftover paint.

I think it looks odd. IMO if you want tiles, get rid of the upstand. I know my walls wound be a state without tiles but plenty of people say no problem.

Agree, tiles or upstand. I personally think tiles are dated, I hate all that grout to clean. I am having a new kitchen and going for glass instead of tiles.
