Or maybe suppliers to avoid?

Have used Brume before and always found them very good.

Does it have to be stylish or just to maintain a bit of privacy?
B+Q have a basic but decent enough range.

When you remove them do they mark? I'd like these but need to remove them later as in a rental.

Brume doesn't mark when you take it off, but you can't reapply it. It's very obscuring - I'd prefer it if it was bit more see-through TBH.

Somebody mentioned that IKEA now does stick-on window film... from another web forum:
*I got some Amorf window frosting from IKEA.

It's cheap at £1.99 for 1500 x 500 mm compared to some other stuff but
it's tricky to fit. I'm wanting to cover up 4 windows 950 x 650 mm and
am doing it in two pieces each 650 x 475.

The problem is it fills up with air bubbles and looks terrible from
outside, then gradually starts to peel off as it's not very sticky.

Has anybody done this and made a good job of it. What's the alternative?*

Re the application (I've done the Brume stuff fine, although it's a 2 person job) - you should make sure the window (and environment) is spotlessly clean. Clean the window with meths. Any dust will show. 2 drops washing up liquid in a spray bootle of water. Liberally spray the sticky side of film and the window, then you can slide the film into the exact position and then squeedgee the water out using an old credit card.

Thanks for this, will see whether I can get some reviews from the B&Q stuff, too as I want to make sure the quality is ok. I hate buying twice...

We have this magnetic frosting in our bathroom. Very pleased. We had the clinging stuff up before and it kept falling off.

I have used www.abodewindowfilms.co.uk/ privacy frosting in 2 houses now.

I have put it over clear glass on the garage door so people can't see what is in there, I put it over obscured glass in the bathroom and en-suite and I have put it over etched glass in the front door to give more privacy as it had a clear bit within the etched glass.

Personally I can do it by myself but if you are doing a larger window than say half a door it helps to have an extra pair of hands.

Mine have been up for years, no peeling etc

I didn't understand this bit The magnets will also adhere to wood and metal

DorisIsWaiting · 03/07/2012 12:45

I usd Brume and they've been very good.

These are the trade suppliers, probably a bit more expensive but they are easy to apply and have a 10 year guarantee.

For large areas, it's best to apply damp. Fill a clean spray bottle with water and a few drops of washing up liquid, spray the sticky side of the film, apply to window then work from the middle outwards, squeezing out any air bubbles and water with a rubber squeegee (you can get these cheaply in the tile section of DIY stores, they are used for making grout look neat after tiling). Wipe the edges, then leave for a few minutes to dry before trimming the edges with a scalpel.

pigletjohn I assume it is one magnet stuck to the window, then the 'frosted blind' panel has magnets attached which holds it on. I think what the manufacturer is saying is you can stick the first set of magnets direct onto the glass or onto the wood or metal frame, depending how you want to fit the blinds in place.

I think these look good for me as even if they do mark after removal, it is only four little squares of adhesive rather than a whole sticker across the glass.

Babbit · 03/07/2012 13:27

Yes, there are two magnets; one stuck to the glass/wood and the other to the frosted sheet. You can then remove to clean windows.
