Freestanding (preferably) cast iron baths

Our original 1930s iron freestanding bath is looking extremely tired, and DH complains its too narrow (it is). I've looked into getting it re-enamelled (about £390) which doesn't solve the width problem.

Any recommendations for a new one? I'm looking for a traditional roll top, double ended. Am I right in thinking that cast iron ones are still much nicer than acrylic ones? (harder wearing, maintain bath water temperature for longer, just 'feel' better)

Does this look like good value at £630? (and anyone hazard a guess at the wall colour because I want my bedroom to look exactly like that - sans bath)

Thanks Smile

It is very good value, we got our bath from them, they are a great company to deal with.

I'd try a salvage yard. Smile

Thanks both.

five that's good to hear. Did you get anything else from them?

ladysybil thought about that too but would probably be less hassle to revamp our existing one Smile

The taps, we found loo, sink and radiator cheaper elsewhere.

amazonianwoman · 02/07/2012 20:44

Can I ask where? Please!

Not much of a reduction though.
Do you need to buy anything else so you can ask for a little bit more off? Always worth a try just asking...I've saved some ££ like that.

Plastic baths retain heat for longer in my experience. They shouldn't but they seem to. (just realised this may be because my friends bath is smaller therefore less heat evaporating??? So, a bigger wider one may get cooler more quickly....)
But iron feels, looks and is more solid and nicer looking.
Still much prefer a cast iron one.

Salvage yard great idea.

The colour looks like farrow and ball 'bone' to me - a greyish green. Maybe.

Catsmamma · 02/07/2012 20:47

I was going to say reclamation yards, £390 to resurface, still gives you gets fingers and toes out and counts £240 to spend there, but that bath in your link is so perfect!!

Catsmamma · 02/07/2012 20:49

AND someone might buy your old one!

amazonianwoman · 02/07/2012 20:58

I was thinking bone or French Gray...

I am loathe to get rid of ours because the shape is good, it would look good with new enamel and, well I just don't like giving up on old things! But it really is too narrow for him and he does a lot of sport so would love a big bath. Will reconsider reclamation but fear in Cheshire they probably make a lot of money out of them!

Would definitely try to barter if buying basin/toilet/shower enclosure etc too.

Got quote from CP Hart today - £1000 even in a supposed 50% off sale just for the bath, feet & waste.

F&b ' light blue' or skylight not sure

fivegomadindorset · 02/07/2012 21:03

this is where we got the rest from

amazonianwoman · 02/07/2012 21:13

Thanks will bookmark that site.

Hmm not looking like bone now that I'm on different screen. I love light blue, have it in the main bathroom. Just ordered a sample of Little Greene pearl. I HATE choosing paint colours!!

We had a cast iron bath in our last house that we replaced with a large free standing acrylic bath (went for a more contemporary feel) and it was much better than the old cast iron bath - water seemed to get cold very quickly in old cast iron bath.

FWIW, we have F&B French Gray in the kitchen and its much greener than the photo - so I'm guessing its not that. Would love to know what it is though as I quite fancy that too Grin

Also agree that reclamation yards in Cheshire won't save you anything, Angry - you might want to look further afield!

Blue Gray?!
