Bedroom styling- also mattress advice!

We are currently painting what will be our master bedroom (F&B Pointing with white satinwood trim) and when we've finished we want to furnish it pretty much from scratch, as our old bedroom furniture will stay in the spare room. All we have is a pair of tall white gloss Ikea wardrobes that will go one in each alcove either side of the chimney breast. These are new (bought in a bit of a rush due to moving from flat with fitted wardrobes) so have to stay.

Our house is an Edwardian terrace with ceilings about 3m high, fairly deep cornices and skirting boards and a dado rail. The bedroom in question also has a cast iron fireplace with cream, brown and yellow tiles, and a medium sized west facing window. I've already bought floor length curtains in this pattern Cole & Son cow parsley and we will probably get an oatmeal coloured carpet.

I have always wanted a sleigh bed and we have seen this in Laura Ashley and really like it: Broughton bed - I just need some reassurance that it will look ok with our white gloss wardrobes. I was thinking of getting the matching bedside drawers with some Original btc lamps (here) and maybe an Eames rocker (or a lookalike- like this to tie in the classic and modern styles. Do people think that could work?

Also what would be the best place to look for a mattress to go on a slatted bed frame like the one I linked to? I know divan bases are supposed to be more comfy, but I hate the look of them. Laura Ashley mattresses are 50% off at the moment but I'm not convinced they will be any good.

Hope the links work!

I absolutely love the Hector lamps (have been coveting for ages), so I'm sure the rest of your taste is up to par! Grin

I personally don't think I could put that eames chair in a room with the broughton bed though.

CaptainWentworth · 27/06/2012 23:22

Ooh, thanks for the vote of confidence on the lamp Montmartre- all the original btc ones are lovely aren't they? You may be right about the chair; wouldn't be able to buy something like that for a while really so was just an idea. I do feel like it would need something to tie in the minimalist wardrobes to a traditional bed/ bedside table though. DH is keen on the matching Laura A chest of drawers too, but worried that could be too much IYSWIM (as well a bit over budget for now).

Does anyone else have any thoughts? Would love to be nosey and know what you all have done with your bedrooms!

I think that bed will be fine with modern white wardrobes. It's not like it's an antique and it's a fairly unfussy design.

We have the opposite - a modern take on a sleigh bed like this together with an antique mahogany wardrobe. I think they complement each other. We also have the bedside tables that match the bed, an antique chest of drawers and an antique dressing table and chair.

We have Original BTC Hector wall lamps and my experience hasn't been great with them as bedside lamps. Because they are made of china, they are quite fragile and DH has chipped them with his drinking glass, watch etc.

The company will supposedly supply replacement backplates, shades etc but we've had no luck getting them to so much answer the phones Angry

You move bedside lamps about quite a lot so next time I'll be getting something sturdier, in metal perhaps Hmm

Rhubarbgarden · 28/06/2012 11:14

Same problem here with bedside lamps. We've got through about 5 in the past two years; someone is always knocking them off and breaking them. Yet it's surprisingly hard to find ones that aren't fragile. If anyone sees any rubber ones, shout will you?! The clumsy Rhubarb household would be most grateful Grin

Have a look at John Lewis for mattresses. In the clearance there have been some Vi-Spring mattresses on offer.

montmartre · 28/06/2012 20:43

Oh- that's a shame about the hectors Sad

Good thing I can't afford them then... Wink

CaptainWentworth · 29/06/2012 10:20

Oh dear- yes, don't want to get posh lamps if they're going to chip easily. We've had a pair of cheapo Ikea glass bedside lamps for the past few years and they have been fine, but sod's law dictates that as soon as we get nice ones they will get knacked!

Also Rhubarb thanks for the vote of confidence on mixing styles of furniture.

John Lewis was going to be my first port of call for mattresses- must go and see which vi-spring ones you speak of. I had a quick look on the website but they only seemed to have 'special buy' ones in clearance, not anything actually reduced. Would have gone into town last night actually but got caught up in the north east storm travel chaos and didn't get home from work until 9.45! With wet feet might I add, because the leaking water set off the fire alarm in our building Angry

The John Lewis Harper lamp is very similar to the Hector but with a white metal shade. It has a similar groovy striped cord! It feels quite weighty too and is about half the price.

'Special buys' are usually quite good value and aren't seconds.

amazonianwoman · 01/07/2012 08:12

Flex, not cord...
