Vinyl flooring?

What's the general feeling about vinyl flooring? Is it a big no-no or an acceptable floor covering?

Currently in our kitchen we have a poorly fitted wood veneer. The dining room leads off the kitchen and has carpet. The dining room opens onto the garden so the carpet is marked as a result of us coming in and out of the garden on wet days.

I'd love to tile both rooms but we have major work to do in that area of the house at some point in the future so seems a waste of time and money to tile now. Therefore wondered if fitting a decent vinyl floor would be a suitable option in the short term?

I'd be interested to hear people's views.

I've had it before, and had it on a recent refit.

It was one with a spongy cushion backing.

Found it marked easily from the feet of appliances, even if they were not dragged but lifted into place or moved on rollers.

In my commercial premises we recently had some very dense sheet flooring laid, but IIRC it was £465 for a 4mx2m kitchen.

Yes, The floor becoming marked so easily is something to consider, thanks. Also, I don't want to spend huge amounts as looking for a cheap alternative to tiles.

I have tiles like amtico but they ate make by a company called "project floors" (much cheaper than amtico). I love it and wouldn't have anything else. In fact am thinking about replacing wooden laminate in lounge with the same as it is so much quieter.

I am thinking of tile-effect or laminate next time.
