Does anyone have a freestanding (i.e. not fitted) kitchen? is it much cheaper?

My kitchen is in desperate need for a revamp, it's not been touched for 20 years (we moved here 3 years ago).

I am wondering whether anyone would recommend a free standing kitchen, and whether it works out cheaper? I do like the look, and I don't want anything brand spanking new stainless steel and all that stuff etc.

I like the stuff from here and would love to know if anyone has used them, or anywhere else similar.

What is the difference between a fitted and freestanding kitchen? Can you literally move a freestanding one around if you get bored of how it looks? I think I'm asking thicko questions but honestly don't know! Blush

My mother has a free standing kitchen. It has a dresser which has a work surface and all her jars of ingredients on. She has a cooker and gas bottle, a fridge which has the kettle/toaster on, one wall mounted cupboard, a full height free standing cupboard and of cours the sink.

It is a minimal sort of kitchen, although she is an excellent cook.

If you went to the auction and bought cupboards and a dresser I bet it would be very cheap, but you would not get much surface, and you would have to take your time if you wanted to achieve any sort of look (except random mismatch)

this sort of thing will be far cheaper than this in an auction.

Freestanding takes up loads more space and less storage

No, but I have a fantasy of having a 50s style kitchen with freestanding units. I hate the look of contemporary fitted kitchens.

Can you go for a mix? So one wall say fitted cream units, eg where the sink/oven is then other walls freestanding units?

Depends very much on size of kitchen. Small may look cluttered and not most optimal use of space. Def cheaper if you just buy odds and sods but I've never been convinced that the free standing ranges from eg m and s work out cheaper. I suppose you save on fitting?

I have freestanding range, sink (though realistically the sink isn't going anywhere) all storage is built in as it is the best use of space and easier to keep clean. I Do have lots of open shelves which is cheaper than built in wall cupboards
