How much for a painter/decorator?

We would like to hire someone to strip anaglypta wallpaper, prep the walls and repaint the hall landing and stairs. The hall and landing are essentially squares with doors on each side (cottage with central staircase) but the stairs have walls down both sides (ie no open bannister). The stairs are steep and stairwell is high hence the need to get a professional in.

How much can we expect to pay for this? We're in the south east.

How long should it take?

We would prefer to provide the paint ourselves (BIL works for ICI so good discount available to us. Would this be ok?

Where should I look for someone to do this? References would be needed.

Any other advice? This is our first room on a project so as you can tell its all very new!

I don't know about the wallpaper stripping side of it, but I recently had two bedrooms painted - cracks filled, windows and other woodwork sanded and painted, and it took two days per room, £500 per room. I have the feeling this was a bit steep but I wasn't in the mood for haggling or getting in loads of quotes, I just wanted it doing as quickly and painlessly as possible. They did an excellent job and were reliable, neat and tidy etc etc so I'd use them again. I'm in London. Oh and they gave us the option of providing our own paint or them getting it.

Thank you. I'm wondering if I should just do the prep work myself since this seems to be where the time would be used up. How hard can it be to strip a bit of wallpaper ha ha!

2k for entire interior of 3 bed flat with 3m high walls in C London. Included prep and filling. Had a quote for 12k also! The cheaper guy did a superb job. If you are in Lon abd want his details, pm me.

similar to above. in london and we pay 120 per day. we use a friend's brother so were always happy to trust him on length of job. he always underestimates but is a perfectionist. we used to think we could diy decorate until we used him. he is brilliant!

That's really helpful thanks.

Unfortunately we're about half hour outside London or I'd get their numbers. The other point I need to consider is that I'm a CM and knowing how quickly my walls get scuffed and marked, I don't want to pay too much if it's going to need redoing every other year.

We haven't been able to afford to get decorators in, but I'd say if you want to save money, do strip the wallpaper yourself. It's a messy and nasty job, but has v. little skill involved so it's really worth not paying a professional to do it! Do hire a good steam machine thingy though - costs about 50 quid for a weekend.

£500 a room is the going rate in London but I wouldnt pay it. Ridiculous for the amount of work. I haggled down to £300 and the job was excellent. Get recs from friends and don't be conned by greedy arseholes.

we got a washable emulsion for our hall and stairs. was crown paint i think. has been great for getting rid of had marks and scuffs over the last 4 years and going strong.

NickNacks · 28/06/2012 21:07

Thanks will take a look at Crown. I've also been looking at Dulux diamond trade paint - anyone used this??
