Kitchen fitter quote - fair? shall we go with him?

Just had a quote for our kitchen:

It's to include capping off our radiator, re-routing a gas pipe, three electrical sockets, re routing plumbing to outside, fitting 6 base units (inc sink), 8 wall units and two larders including one with a pull out system. All ikea units and with gas/ electric certificates.

It's £1300 and he seems very professional/ prompt at replying etc.

What do you think?

We've just paid more than double that! We had plastering done too but still!

Gentleness · 14/06/2012 23:20

Is he assembling them?

We paid £600 for many more units than that but assembly/installation only - no building/gas/plumbing/electric and co-ordinating it all was a nightmare. So if you have good references, I reckon that's a good all-in price! I like having references!

Thanks gentleness, yes I think he'll be assembling them. I'm going to get my DH to check all the fine details tommorow. My plasterer (who we kind of know- a relative of a neighbour) recommended him as he sometimes sub contracts for him and he himself is having his kitchen done by him now.

He also has a website with previous jobs and they all look pretty neatly done.

Sounds good.

Is it a quote or an estimate? If it's a quote, get it in writing and then don't be persuaded that, actually, he forgot this or that or something else was thrown up and you actually owe more.

A lot of tradesmen come in low and then add on all sorts of extras.

Gentleness · 15/06/2012 16:16

You sound more organised than me but just in case, don't forget to include in the list fitting any under wall cabinet lights. We did and so no-one thought it was their job and it was a real palava that still had to be finished a year later!

PanicMode · 16/06/2012 10:40

We've literally just shut the door on the kitchen designer chappy and he said a 'standard' fit for the units is £2k, so that sounds very good. Shame the rest of the project is coming in at 20 times that amount.....!

noddyholder · 16/06/2012 11:19

That sounds a bargain!

DueinSeptember · 16/06/2012 11:33

Thanks everyone - I think my husband is going to call him today and check all the details over and book him.

My only concern is that he cannot do it very soon. The earliest is two months away, a month before my due date! Hoping that it will be ok!

It's probably good that he can't do it immediately - he's in demand and that's always a good sign of a good tradesman. I'd be wary of anyone who could start 'tomorrow'.
