Guttering on a shed

(I posted this in Gardening but nobody replied :( so shall try here instead!)

We're replacing the two falling down sheds we inherited with a single 6x10ft one which hopefully will not leak, let in mice to eat birdfood etc. It will be going on some hardstanding by the side of the house/ next door's fence and hopefully we'll plant some climbers in pots to disguise it a bit. Is it worth putting guttering on to have a water butt, or should we just stick with one on the main house downpipe?

My areas of uncertainty are; a) guttering will not look very nice, and might stop climbers going up properly (and then get blocked by said climbers)
b) without guttering, would rain then splash back on the lower half of the wood and damage it? or would it drown any plants in pots?

Would it be better just to put guttering on the side by the fence, to stop possible wet damage to that side, and then let rain on the other side fall off and water the plants? Can you tell I'm a beginner at all this?

We have it on our shed and get plenty of water enough to water the garden, definatly worth it in my opinion.

We have a large shed and put in guttering and a water butt. We get loads of water from the roof, well worth it IMO.

We have a shed with guttering, my DP is very proud of it Grin

Righto, guttering it is then! If we put it only on three sides and not on the long one that will be visible, at least that might be a bit less obtrusive. Thank you kind DIY topic ladies Wink

Sorry if i am getting the wrong end of the stick but i cant visualise how you will need the guttering on 3 sides. If you have a monopitch you only need one length of guttering along the one low edge of the roof. If you have a conventional duo pitch you will have 2 low roof edges to catch water off. Unless you have some fancy facetted triangular number of course....

You know what tricot, you're absolutely right. So how does the water get from the two long sides to the water butt tho - surely it needs a horizontal connector otherwise you lose one side's worth of rain? So if we're not doing the two long sides, we only really need it along one long side and then stop there, it wouldn't need to be on the short side at all. Argh, I just don't know!

We did think about a pent roof but it's going to be in a position where both us and the neighbours will look out on it, we didn't want to put the tall side against neighbours (they're very nice and it would be about a foot of not very attractive shed wall above their fence right by their conservatory and patio) but neither did we want it when we look out of the kitchen window, hence the apex styleee.

you really do need a gutter along each side that water runs off. Otherwise the bottom of the shed on the wet side will rot very quickly.

Sheds are preferably raised off the ground on paving slabs or a few courses of bricks to keep them off the damp ground, but without gutters, water will run down the sides.

You can run a gutter along a gable end to join the front gutter to the corner where the downpipe is, for the waterbutt or drain. Remember to include an overflow for the butt so it doesn't just gush out next to the shed.

doh! Blush
yes that will be 3 sides then! unless you have 2 waterbutts
as piglet john said!

Super, thanks all. It is on a hardstanding, on a raised wooden base, and we have got some random slabs lying around which used to be under the old dodgy sheds so will get those put under as well to raise up. Thankyou Grin
