What radiators would you recommend for an older-style property?

We've bought a complete tip renovation project so I suspect this may be the first of very many questions as I boggle with panic at what we've taken on.

One of the first things we need to do is install central heating to replace the storage heaters. Which means radiators, and quite a few so they can't be too expensive. Which ones have you bought and were they any good? At the moment the B&Q column radiators look good, but is there anything else like that?

Personally I would go for the most unobtrusive radiators possible rather than trying to get "period" ones. The Victorian cast iron style ones are very bulky and I think the Victorians generally used them in schools etc rather than houses anyway.

I like flat panel radiators like the ones made by Hudevad catalogue - they come in all sorts of sizes and fade into the background.

Some of the sectional rads can be quite slim - these come in a variety of depths. The picture shows 3 column depth but you can have 2 column which are only 64cm deep. Obviously the fewer columns the lower the output but as you can have these in a huge range of heights and widths you can design exactly the right size for each space. The white ones are cheaper than the coloured ones.

Meant to say, if you go to somewhere like Travis Perkins and get them to quote you should be able to haggle on the price - they get very good margin on them.

Minipie - I do like the simple radiators, but I think they'd just look a bit wierd next to our wobbly floorboards and odd walls, in fact they'd probably be the only straight lines in the whole place Grin. The front half of the house is reputedly 17thC so there isn't really a 'right' radiator out there I suspect, just least inappropriate.

I hadn't thought of Travis Perkins as there isn't one in town, but will investigate.
