where should i avoid if i were thinking of coming back, to buy a house?

and where is ok?

it used to be that certain areas were not great, im thinking tang hall, acomb, bell farm avenue, leeman road....these were not great areas when i was a lass.

but ive been gone since 1990. thats a long time. my budget isnt great (my house has lost value so at current market values my budget to buy in york would be about £150,000.....im not sure that would get me much!)

i grew up in old earswick and huntington.
i dont think schools will be an issue as i reckon by the time we moved my youngest would have left.....im thinking it may be a year or so away, but she wants to go to college.

where is ok?
and where isnt?
cheers....

Well York property prices have rocleted in the last 20 years. Over that time it has gone from fairly grim post industrial city to the place to the desirable place to live and commute to Leeds and London.

The shops are all closing in the centre of the city as they are building a big shopping centre on the outskirts.

I used to live near York as a child and we thought about moving back about 5 yrs ago - could not find anywhere to live for anything but huge prices.

Acomb is still not the best place acoridng to my mother who grew up there as a child and still lives nearby.

It's pretty much the same in terms of areas to avoid - although this is York, no where is too bad!

Heworth and Fulford seem to be the places for naice middle classness.

Or Bishopthorpe.

Or Bishophill, actually, although most of the houses there too small for a proper family home. Some real bargains there at the moment though, and really close to town.

just as well im not naice middleclass then! Grin actually i used to live in Fulford....i am soooo wishing that DH had listened to me when i suggested buying our 3 bed furnished flat for £35,000....

sigh.

Strensall seems nice, I have friends there.

If you've not got school aged DC then I would suggest Heworth, however it is a bit of a school black hole for secondary. Scarcroft Hill area also lovely, but eye wateringly expensive. I wouldn't say Leeman Road was too bad, but it is on the Park and Ride bus route and, with narrow streets, that could be annoying. Fulford's also nice, but for me I'd find it a bit too far out. Bus services are good though and cycling is very safe and easy in York. Near Rowntree park is nice, Haxby Road also good. This isn't in the nicest area but is lovely and very convenient for town]].

Other than the places already mentioned, I would possibly avoid some areas in Clifton and Rawcliffe but you can't really go wrong at all.

Depending where you're coming from rental prices aren't extortionate either.

Good luck with the move, York really is lovely!

actually really liked the third house there bamboozled....

i suppose there is no point in seriously looking until i have sold mine though, but good to know not much has changed and good to see whats out there....ive been on right move all night!

thanks.
