Suggestions for a colour to go with gold + cream bedding?

Tried to post this earlier but MN went offline - so here goes again!

I've bought new bedding which is gold & cream, and the bedroom furniture is white. Some of the wardrobe doors are glass fronted with fabric behind them. The fabric is lilac at the moment which I need to change, but can't decide what colour! Should I stick with gold or choose a contrasting colour and if so, what colour?

Any advice and/or suggestions would be welcome please - I'm not very confident with combining colours and/or patterns!

Gold would look good but so would a contrasting colour like teal maybeHmm

YNK · 08/06/2012 00:04

Red would look very regal. (My bedroom is cream gold and crimson)

hadagutsfull · 08/06/2012 00:11

Thanks for both those suggestions. I've got some teal downstairs so hadn't really thought of that! I like red but am worried about it being a bit too bright although there are so many different shades available. I wish I was the type of person who can see a tiny bit of fabric or colour and visualise a whole room or scheme! I start with good intentions but then get myself really confused about what will & won't work ...

What about a baby or duck egg blue? Or is that a bit of a cop out?

A nice sage green would look pretty & stylish.

whyme2 · 08/06/2012 06:57

I think the teal suggestion is a good one or a deep red/crimson colour.

If you wanted to go with a paler colour again a baby blue would be nice or a mint green.

hadagutsfull · 08/06/2012 10:50

Thanks icelolly and whyme - I just typed a reply and lost it again when I tried to post - what's going on???

DH has an irrational dislike of green, although I think it would look nice, so I'm keeping that one on the back burner for now. Am torn between going for a bolder colour - teal or red - or a softer blue or (possibly!) green

The bedding has matching curtains but they're not big enough for the window. Would you have the same curtains & fabric for the wardrobes? Or have three different (hopefully complementary) for bedding, curtains, and wardrobes? I'm wishing I'd never started this ...

Going to try & post now before it disappears again!

What about cream, gold & a mauvey colour or even a taupey mushroom.

Icelollycraving · 08/06/2012 11:21

There is a dulux colour called emporium rose 2 that may look nice (never learnt to do links, sorry!)

hadagutsfull · 08/06/2012 17:55

Just had a look at emporium rose 2 icelolly - it's very nice thank you! I need to go and get some samples & sort myself out. Thanks for the help - much appreciated.

Yay,I'm useful at last

HomeEcoGnomist · 08/06/2012 22:51

Brown. I know that might sound grim, but my bedroom is lovely chocolate, cream and gold

woodleydoodle · 09/06/2012 17:53

Burgundy can look nice. Used sparingly though :-)
Zero 'red' accessories.
With some dark/bottle green, esp foliage/bit of velvet.

woodleydoodle · 09/06/2012 18:10

I'd avoid teal, too trendy. Or, I'd keep it to minimal accessories only. Will date, already has :-) quickly. Fine if you like updating regularly/don't mind being 'unfashionable'.

I've loved teal/petrol blue for years. I've picked up bits of colored glass/accessories/fabric for my living room. From charity shops/carboots etc. The room isn't 'teal and...' though, iyswim. Wallpaper/wall colour, sofa, curtains etc are neutral.

doradoo · 09/06/2012 18:33

can you use the curtains as the wardrobe fabric?

then a co-ordinating blind or somesuch on the window?

hadagutsfull · 09/06/2012 21:30

HomeEcoGnomist You bedroom sounds lovely but what colour is the furniture? Mine's white - I think that would look OK?

Woodley I know what you mean about teal being trendy. I do like it (a lot!) but it's been around a long time now. My bedroom hasn't been decorated for 10 years Blush so I do want to avoid it looking dated overnight!

doradoo I'm not sure the if the curtains would work in the wardrobe partly due to size and also because they are very plain apart from a pattern where they would meet in the middle if they were at the window. They might be a bit lost behind the glass, a bolder colour or pattern may work better. I might buy a pair just to try though ...

It's all oak, so goes well - it's quite rich/warm as colour schemes go. I even paid attention to the colour charts and chose the palest of colours from the same group, so it's all tonal
Just need to do the rest of the house now Grin

hadagutsfull · 09/06/2012 23:05

It sounds lovely! Do you think it would work with white furniture??? I can sort of visualise it - I think ....

Good luck with the rest of the house - we've been in ours over 20 years and there's still something in every room that's not been finished. Drives me mad!

I can't see why not - isn't that the beauty of white, it goes with everything!

Work on new extension & kitchen starts next mon...

hadagutsfull · 09/06/2012 23:23

That's true. I'm going towards the idea more and more now Grin

Good luck with the extension & kitchen - I would love to be able to start from scratch. Hope you've got lots of colour charts and ideas!
