Following on from my "awkward" kitchen thread in April - new design

Following on from this:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/property/1457360-Does-this-look-odd-to-you-kitchen-DH-thinks-so

Some new pics (although the designer wants more money to finish them so probably won't get them drawn) on profile.

I would appreciate input on what to do with the wall above the sink - we would have to cut back the wall units to make them fit.

We are now thinking of open shelving with our crockery on and which would fit the space perfectly, and a built in cooker hood (ie below a cupboard).

Any other comments welcome too!

Photos on profile. Top ones are the new version, bottom 2 are the old versions.

We are now at PLAN E... Confused

The pictures make it look like there is loads of empty space in the room but it's really not that big and the bin will be in there too (big Brabantia one)!

I think the new one l

Oops, hit post by accident ...

I think the new one is much much better :)

But there are a lot less cupboards in the new one, and I can't see where the fridge has gone? Could you cope with the reduced storage?

The fridge is integrated in this one, so it's the tall cupboard on the left.

We are going to have the Ramsjo White Ikea kitchen

like this: st.houzz.com/simages/344271_0_4-1434-modern-kitchen.jpg (not particularly good photo!)

There are fewer cupboards but we have paced it out and everything from our current kitchen fits, with a bit of space to spare.

We have a basement (one of the doors you can see) off the kitchen where we keep the big stuff, and also the dining room is right next door and we have a big dresser in there for the "posh" stuff.

Kitchen designer is concerned that there won't be enough cupboards...

This design is basically our ideas.

Only thing is that the microwave is going to go in the cupboard above the fridge (it's about the height we have it now so not a problem). This means we will only be able to get a fridge - not a fridge freezer (but we have 2 big chest freezers in the basement).

Any other comments???

I prefer the new one, but wouldn't open shelving mean dusty crockery?

FrozenChocolate · 08/06/2012 12:07

In the top photo, why don't you extend the cupboards/worksurface to where the breakfast bar is by the door, and scrap all the stuff in the corner and put the table and chairs there, so your line of cupboards etc is all in one long area rather than in two sections?

FrozenChocolate · 08/06/2012 12:11

and move the radiator to the corner where the fridge is, near the table.

jamaisjedors · 08/06/2012 12:40

That would be good Frozen but we can't move the radiator - it's a hugely heavy cast-iron one and we'd have to tear up the floor etc.

The kitchen is a pain in that there is hardly any wall space and all those doors and windows!

I prefer the new one, but if it were me, would have the wall with the fridge and oven on as floor to ceiling cupboards instead of cupboards above the sink. I'm amazed how much I can fit above and below our eye-level double oven. I'd even consider a cupboard above the door! I'd have the seating area as a table instead of fixed.

I'd have hooks for funky things like colanders above the sink. And maybe open shelving for everyday cups/tea/coffee depending where you are going to have the kettle!

It is a tricky room with all those doors!

jamaisjedors · 10/06/2012 14:30

Thanks for the comments Gentleness. We are sitting in the kitchen right now, thinking the same as you!!

DH really wants to keep our wall oven, so we are going to put it in the corner with a full-height fridge next to it, as you say (but going round the corner with a little worksurface next to it.

Yes to hooks etc. above the sink/draining board - we have them now and use them constantly.
