Bathroom furniture - those cabinet things with a sink on top I mean. Useful or vile?

That sort of thing.

I have a tiny bathroom, 1.7m by 2.10m and I'd like somewhere to keep the DCs bath toys, shampoo etc. I don't have room for a separate cupboard but is a basin unit indescribably horrid?

Will it date, do you think? I was thinking either an oak or white gloss unit with large format grey tiles.

I have them. They're incredibly useful

I don't think it's horrid, no. And it's very useful for unlovely items like loo roll, tampons, spare razors, etc.

I would probably go for a paintable unit though if possible, so you can sand and repaint it if and when it gets chipped/water stained/etc.

Our carpenter made us a cupboard to fit under our sink for about the same price as a readymade "unit" would have cost - he made it out of water resistant MDF so it was paintable.

Link.

I like them. I'm going to put one in my ensuite because I need more space and that is a dead space at the moment. I has one in my last house too, although was quite ornate and old fashioned.

I have one and it's brilliant. The bathroom is so much tidier.

We have an even smaller bathroom and got units built round the basin and also round the toilet cistern. Invaluable - everything fits there or in med cabinet or one 3-tier basket on the shelf over the loo.

Ours are white gloss to go with the tiles. They have chipped a bit though.

Oreocrumbs: thanks for that!

I think they'd be useful but am wondering about their lifespan. I quite like the idea of having one made so I can repaint it.

Horrid and useful.

what is horrid about them exactly? Everything dates eventually. I have got something similar in both bathrooms. Both are wall hung which makes the bathroom look bigger. Personally, I don't like the ones with a bowl sink on top though.

kitsmummy · 07/06/2012 12:21

grim, but like you say, you could have a nice one made like this?

newpup · 07/06/2012 12:43

I have them in all my bathrooms, nice ones though Smile So useful for hiding razors, tampax etc. Bathrooms all clear and minimalist.

the ones which look like they have a dish standing on top of a cupboard are temporarily fashionable, but for water resistance and ease of cleaning, the ones with a full-width vanity top will be a lot mess trouble.

I bought an oak cupboard, got a full-size top made from white marble with holes drilled in it for the pipe and for the taps (not too dear) and topped it with a round basin from Homebase. It's a perfect fit and gives us loads of storage.

The ready made ones often have one open section, which is fine if you have hours to spend re-rolling all your towels, or don't offer much storage space.
