Not quite sure where to post this but anyhow.

We've just had our kitchen redone and it's lovely. BUT, our sink is now lower than it used to be, partly because of our oven (the fitters said the worktop height is dictated by height of oven) and partly because we've chosen a deeper sink.

And we are both getting a bit of back ache after washing up (worktop is at 36 inches high).

I am trying to think of a way of raising the washing up bowl, by putting something underneath it. It needs to be on something to give it about an inch and a half to two inches. Any ideas?

Thanks for reading

Get a dishwasher?

sheeplikessleep · 05/06/2012 19:20

Got one, but we always have bits and bobs that can't / are too big to go in . Believe me if it fits, it goes in!

What about another bowl, with the top 5 inches or whatever cut off so only bottom 1 or 2 inches left. Turned upside down and glued to bottom of your current bowl?

oreocrumbs · 05/06/2012 19:24

I'm sure I have seen raised washing up bowls in somewhere like a kleeneze cataloge, I think they were with household aids to help people with disabilities. That might be worth a look. I'll see if I can find a link to something.

Good idea, sounds good. Thank you

I've had a look and can't find it. It sticks in my mind because I have a bad back and I remember thinking that it was a good idea! I'll have another look after I've put the little monster to bed.

What about a rack, the type you get in a grill pan or for cooling cakes? Won't block the plug then.

oreocrumbs - i've looked to, but can't find it. it sounds perfect, so i am going to keep looking! thanks

safmellow - i had thought of that, but i don't think it will be deep enough and i'm a bit concerned it might scratch my new sink, hmmm.

Is there a cupboard under your sink? A physio once told me that you're less likely to get backache if you open the cupboard and rest a foot on a shelf in there, so one leg is bent iyswim

sheeplikessleep · 05/06/2012 20:03

really mistress, i can try that, thanks for posting. i am going to go and have a scour through my cupboards to see if i can find anything to put under the bowl. bit peeved about it as i've never thought about it before, obviously our old kitchen had the sink at the right height!

Another washing up bowl underneath it, but upside down ?

Why does the oven make a difference! Have never heard of this!

sheeplikessleep · 06/06/2012 07:54

hazel - i've read that idea online and i think we'll have to go down that route, although it then sits very 'proud' of the sink.

noddy - we've gone for a freestanding rangemaster cooker and the builder said to me, just before they were fitting the kitchen, that the worktop sits flush with the height of the oven. i didn't really think of it at the time (have never ever thought of sink height before!), so just took his word for it. i'm really pissed off at myself for not thinking it through really. but anyway, it's all in now and dh says we just need to manage with it. the worktop is 36inch higher than floor level. but the sink is quite a deep one too.
