What can you tell me about St Albans?

Hi all,

Still on our property hunt trying to narrow down some area's so look at in July.

St Albans comes up frequently as a highly commutable area, the houses look alright and schooling seems reasonable.

Can anyone tell me what it's like to live there from a kids and adults lifestyle perspective? Are there any area's or roads to avoid or an area which is less desirable than others?

Thanks in advance.

Still not sure how to edit posts but the title should have also included Hereford :)

Ignore Hereford, I confused it with Hertfordshire (such a pity, found some amazing homes)

St Albans is very expensive. Primary school places are very difficult with lots of non-siblings not getting a place. Lovely busy small city but you need a lot of money ...

Commute into London is fast but hellishly expensive (do you see a theme here?!)

All schools in St Albans are excellent, from primary to secondary, some may be more popular than others, but there are no bad schools here. There are also fantastic state nurseries and preschool provision is good, there is a wide choice to suit your child.

Property is expensive, particularly near the station. There are lots of areas where lots of families concentrate, Italians, Irish etc You have be on the outskirts if you want a big garden, there is lots of new build going on, but where the children will go to school in 5 years time is a big question, though we have a new Free school opening in September.

There is a very active NCT, lots of groups, classes and activities for children from birth upwards, dance, theatre, sport, music etc.

The shopping is good, all the large supermarkets and a twice weekly market, a farmers market.

20 mins on the train makes theatre going a frequent treat, and lots of people commute, I did myself until 5 weeks before DD was born. LOts of people have moved put from North London to start families. I did 26 years ago and love the city, DH wants to retire to France, but I love it here.

Anymore questions please ask or PM me.

Leighton Buzzard is 45 mins at least from St Albans, not the nicest of places, but depends what you are looking for - cheap large property, but a personal choice in whether you want to live there!

St Albans is a largely affluent area with excellent schools.New primary will be opening soon very close to town centre and a new academy school is opening in the autumn, replacing a former failing school.

Property prices among the highest in country. Imo, far too much residential development permitted and traffic is awful.

I think St Albans is nice but not a patch on other Cathedral cities. The town centre is not appealing and seems to be getting worse.

Nearby Harpenden is much, much nicer and only one stop away on train.

St Albans and harpenden are both lovely places, but house prices are very expensive. The schools are good - one of the reasons for high house prices. St Albans is vey historical, has a cathedral and market. It has a good mix of state and private schools. The commute to London is fairly quick with a frequent service.

Thanks for your comments, will look into harpenden

Harpenden makes St Albans look cheap!

Used to live in St Albans, moved out to a village near Berkhamsted. DH now commutes from Berkhamsted to Euston/Moorgate. The pretty bit of SA is by the cathedral and surrounding streets. It feels very busy these days - I sound old...

Visit the Waffle House (at bottom of Fishpool St), mouth-watering at the thought of a malted choc milkshake.
