Howdens gloss kitchens - expensive?

We've just had a quote for a Howdens for an average size kitchen and it's come out at nearly £6k!

We chose the Glevendon White kitchen but the guy who is fitting our kitchen seems to think it's 30% more expensive than the other ranges. Is this right?

I had my heart set on it but we've got a £7k budget for the kitchen, knocking down a chimney breast and fitting. The other one we like is the Burford White, which I'm hoping comes in cheaper.

Can we negotiate with Howdens to get a more realistically priced kitchen?

We are having a Howdens kitchen (Burford Grey) and it is £5200 - with full discount applied. Fitter is charging us £2000, but that includes knocking down a wall.

Wickes was £15,000 Shock and Magnet £19,000! So Howdens seems like a bargain!

That seems expensive.
I had that kitchen in my old house, so I would have bought the kitchen approx 2006.

My units were £1000, I got oak block worktops from somewhere else for £250.
And my joiner cost £1000 for a week to fit it.

I didn't have any fancy bits inside the cupboards though.

What exactly is included in your quote?

Iwannamovenow · 04/06/2012 19:03

I know that's 6 years ago but surely they've not gone up that much?

EdgarAllenPimms · 04/06/2012 19:21

MIl had a Howdens kitchen and even with the builders %age on top it worked out cheaper than similar from online quotes Wickes, B& Q etc..

it was still expensive as she went for some nice curvy cupboards... (i really liked these but i think only one actually made it into the final plan.)

EdgarAllenPimms · 04/06/2012 19:23

that was also for the high gloss one - though she ended up with white shaker style in the end...

Carcass board has gone up 3 times in the last 18mnths already.
Most suppliers increase prices of 4/5% every year without fail and also import the doors from Italy / Spain and the pound has dropped silly, yet doesn't account the all the rise just alot of it

Have you seen the actual howdens paperwork?

What 'discount' have you got? Negotiate for 75/80 ish.

GlaikitFizzogKnitterOfTheRealm · 04/06/2012 19:28

We priced howedens and b&q for our kitchen and b&q were almost 2k cheaper. Trade prices though. We have the cream gloss slab from b&q.

All you need to set up a trade account is a letter head. Although my dad bought ours for us as he is a kit hen fitter and fits loads of b&q and howedens kitchens. He said there is only one slight difference between our doors in that the b&q one doesnt have the beveled edges at the top and bottom. For an 18 cupboard kitchen with oven housing and work tops we were £2000

belledidlovesebastian · 04/06/2012 19:43

The kitchen fitter hasnt told me what the discount is but it does seem expensive.

ive emailed them tonight to get the price down so we shall see!

The 'discount' rate will depend in part on their relationship with your fitter.

Personally I'd insist on seeing the original howdens quote. It is the only way of working out if you can cut back anywhere.

Fwiw we paid about that for a glendevon kitchen, but our kitchen us very large as we were extending out into our old dining room.

PorkyandBess · 04/06/2012 20:14

Our fitter has passed quotes straight to us, so I can see that discount has been applied, some items 75%, some 85% and some 60%.

I have just seen the worktop is £850, I could probably get it cheaper elsewhere..
