Hi all, we bought our house 18 months ago, the en suite was put on by a previous owner as part of an extension, however it seems to have been done as a bit of a diy project.. Anyway, when you flush the toilet you can feel the floor trembling under you, and it does vibrate through to the dining room (underneath the en suite) the noise is a really loud whining noise with the vibration) We have abandoned the use of the toilet in there. We really dont know where to start with this one, any advice/possible solutions would be gratefully recieved.
TIA

Hi Daxy dont fret I had this and it was a simple part that needed to be fitted by a plumber and cost about £60. Cannot remember for the life of me what it was called but give a plumber a ring and ask, I remember my plumber identified the fault over the phone. Good luck!

Two things

  1. the pipes have not been correctl clamped to the walls and joists. It's easy to do, you need a screwdriver and drill.

  2. you might have an old fashioned ballcock with a big plastic float in the cistern. For at least ten years, "silent" or "quiet" valves have been available. Torbeck and Fluidmaster are two well-known brands.

They fit in as replacements for the old ballcock. the side-entry ones are quicker to fit than the bottom entry. Retail price in a DIY shed might be about £10 to £20.

If you are fitting a bottom-entry one you might think about fitting a Flapper flush valve at the same time, it is extremely simple in design and quieter in use than a syphon. You do have to take the cistern off to do it, and you will find the old screws have rusted solid. Fit all new rubber washers and try vaseline on the new screws before assembly. If you prefer, you can wait until the syphon is worn out and you have to jerk the handle up and down to make it flush.
