Dual fuel cookers - please explain to me - thanks.

I'm not really sure what it means - does it mean that you get a choice of whether to use gas or electric, or does it mean that perhaps for example the oven is gas and the hob is electric? I really don't know.

We've been to have a kitchen plan and we've been told that the current location of our cooker is not up to regulations (it's in a corner, next to a wall). So we have to move the electric plugs or gas around to the other side of the room. I can't work out which would be the easiest or cheapest supply to move.

It usually means that the oven is electric and the hob, gas. A gas hob is generally cheaper to run than an electric one, but an electric oven gives a more even heat than a gas, so the best way is to have the dual fuel. Allegedly Grin

I would imagine the electric would be cheaper to move
I much prefer duel fuel - prefer cooking on a gas hob but electric ovens -more even

Ah right, thanks Poledra. That explains it.

Thanks anothername, we're going to have to get an electrician in to install new sockets anyhow and will probably have to get a new consumer unit so it's probably best to move the electric.

A dual fuel cooker is IMO better, as gas hobs are instant on/off/up/down, and an electric oven with a fan has very even heat (although I think a gas oven puts a better skin on a rice pudding)

If you are having your house rewired, I would get a 40A 6mm Cooker Radial circuit put in, just so you, or some future occupant, can have an electric cooker if you want it. It will be much more trouble to add later.

BTW gas is only pipes, so very easy to change the layout, especially if they are surface mounted on the wall behind the units (not Ikea). You must of course have it done by a Gas Safe certified person.

Thanks Piglet John - We hopefully don't need the house rewired, but we will probably need a new consumer unit. I'll have a chat with electrician when we see him. Friend is a gas engineer, so will see how easy/ expensive he reckons it'll be to run the pipes around. Thanks.
