Tall wall cabinets or not?

We're looking to replace our kitchen - going to get ikea cabinets. The wall cabinets come in standard or tall.

We've got high ceilings in the kitchen (Victorian house) and currently have standard cabinets but there's about 50cm plus between the top of the cabinets and ceiling.

I'm thinking we should get taller cabinets (90cm) as we're not going to have the decorative pelmet (?) on the top.

I'm worried that if we go for the standard cabinets, the gap between the top and ceiling will look too high and a bit silly. However DH and I are short arses (well 5'4") so would need a step to get to the very top.

(still with me..??)

My question is, if you have high ceilings, so you go for tall wall cabinets or not?? Help!

Oh yes go for tall definitely. Storage is always useful. There are always things you don't need very often that can go on the high shelves - Christmas china, birthday cake candles etc.

Yep what Rhubarb said. You can get a little step that folds flat and you can slip down the side of a unit untill you need it if you want.

Def tall ones, I have them. I am taller than you but do need a stool to get to the top shelf but I store stuff up there that I don't use as often, it's not a problem. I also prefer the look of the taller ones anyway, the standard ones just look too small.

definitely tall ones. The tops will get filthy, so put some paper on top, and a trim fitting to the ceiling if you can. You can use the top shelf for those essential kitchen items such as your sandwich toaster, mayonaise blender, salad spinner, pressure-cooker and cake-icing kit.

Thanks all.

The problem still remains though that with tall ones we'd still have quite a bit of space above (about 30cm). We're thinking of having the ceiling lowered for spotlights (we had the same done in the bathroom and given the high ceilings, we still have a good height).

It's an ikea high gloss kitchen so hopefully we could have a bit of trim added to the top...?

don't they do a horizontal top-box (as used over hoods and bridges) that would take up the gap? A door hinged at the top would be convenient.

A cheaper way would be a ply panel, papered or painted to match the walls.

Sorry to butt in, just interested in this - thinking of getting a kitchen with standard units but putting those bridging units on top for extra storage, as pigletjohn suggests. Does anyone have this and does it look ok?

OP - I really like those tall cabinets, go for it!

Yes they have those horizontal cabinets but worried it might be too much. Room is about 3.5m*3.5m so not huge, just tall walls. I might have a go on the planner again and see how it looks Grin
