Do you think this would be fair- tradesman related?

I had a quote about 3 weeks ago for some plastering from a recommended tradesman, he's an electrician by trade and also does other stuff like building etc.

I got three quotes in total and he was slightly more expensive than another local plasterer; we've chosen to go with the cheaper one as he also came recommended.

I now need some electrical work done (consumer unit and sockets), do you think it'll be fair to get in touch with the electrician and say something like 'Thanks for the plastering quote, unfortunately we've gone with another plasterer as we had a slightly cheaper quote - We have some electrical work that needs to be done if you would be interested in giving us a quote. My husband will get in touch Monday if that's ok'.

I feel quite guilty - should I try elsewhere, or would that be ok?

It would be fine- don't mention the plastering and if he asks just say you had a cheaper quote. I would ring and ask him about the electrics and just not mention the previous quote unless he does.

People get quotes all the time and so this won't be a first for him Smile

electricians are ususually better electricians than they are plasterers, though some learn to fill in chases and around boxes neatly, it is not the same as doing a wall or ceiling. Was he recommended as an electrician, or as a plasterer? Is he a member of a competent persons scheme?

Thanks.

He'd done some building work (he runs a general house renovation company) for my friend and she was pleased with him. The reason I chose the actual plasterer (apart from price) in the end, is that I thought that was his trade and that he does it day in day out.

This guy is supposed to be a good electrician as the people who had recommended him to my friend had had electrical work done by him (a few houses in her street). I know he's Part P qualified and a member of NAPIT???

There is not actually a "Part P Qualification" but it usually means they are members of a competent person scheme such as NAPIT, though this also has membership sections for Plumbers and Heating Engineers, so verify that his membership is as an electrician, and preferably not just as a Domestic Installer since this is the lowest level.

p.s.

for some reason that site doesn't seem to include NICEIC or Elecsa, for example, although it is worded to give the impression that it shows all the schemes..

Thanks Piglet John.
