Stainless steel splashback - anyone got one?

If so, how much effort are they to keep clean?

Thanks

I have one, it's fine. If I have been particularly lazy and not wiped it for a while I give it a squirt of Fairy Power Spray, and leave it for 10 mins, and it cleans up really nicely.

Just don't do what dh did and clean it with one of those rough scrubbers for doing the pans!!! Angry

sheeplikessleep · 22/05/2012 14:06

Phew, that's a relief! We'll go for that then. They seem to vary massively in price from £80 up to £200. Has anyone bought a cheap one and found it to be OK? Bit concerned it might be dent more? But our kitchen has gone WAY over budget, so if I can spend £80 on it, I'll be chuffed

Thanks for posting

Meeeeee and I loves it! I second the baby wipes, or baby oil, or bar keepers friend.

Graciescotland · 22/05/2012 14:11

I bought ten pound panels in ikea, you buy runners and they slot together (not sure if they still sell them). Baby oil is your friend polishes without scratching.

MummyPigandDaddyPig · 22/05/2012 14:20

Got a made to measure one off ebay cheap as chips, did the job beautifully. Babyoil or baby wipes is a must.

sheeplikessleep · 22/05/2012 14:22

I do love the look of them, I guess I'd been put off by the thought of keeping it clean and smear free.

Will it smear if I just wipe over with fairy liquid at the end of washing up, day to day. Then do a monthly or whatever baby oil / wipe polish?

We have one. It was Zanussi's standard one, less than £100 (can't remember exactly how much). To be honest, I don't love it - has only been there since last summer (when we got a new kitchen) and is already scratched, even though I don't think it's got scratched when we clean it. I think I've bumped pans into it or something. Not dented at all though. You do need to clean it fairly often, but to be honest you'd need to clean any kind of splashback. I just use my usual kitchen squirter.

Not sure what I'd go for if we were doing the kitchen again - glass will also show up the dirt (probably worse), if we had tiles the grouting would get all scummy and greasy. Hm. Might still go with the stainless steel!

Wigeon · 22/05/2012 14:25

I've never polished it (with eg baby oil) - I just clean with normal kitchen squirter, then dry off with a microfibre cloth (or teatowel, but microfibre means no streaks).

tomatoface · 22/05/2012 16:29

we have one, Ikea I think, and it's no bother

myron · 22/05/2012 20:39

I'm planning to have one with potentially metallic grey glass mosaic tiles on either side. It's the most practical choice and installed in all commercial kitchens.

nemno · 23/05/2012 13:04

OK. I clicked on this thread thinking you,d all be giving the OP a resounding no to the practicality of stainless. Now I'm confused, I must be doing something wrong. I have a brushed stainless bath panel (ie the whole side of bath) and long above-sink shelf, they are a total PITA. Every drip/soap mark needs polishing out in the direction of the 'grain' and once it is dry I have to go over most of it again with a slightly damp micro cloth. The end bits are particularly difficult in the manner of window cleaning as you cannot do cloth strokes in line with the damn grain. With this big expanse of steel all fingermarks, water evap mark etc show hugely. Does using baby oil mean this directional polishing is not needed? Help please

We had one before, it cleans up quite well if you buff it with a tea towel when you dry it. My husband managed to scrape it with a pan though and after that it's all I could see!

Rhubarbgarden · 24/05/2012 06:58

My brother had one and ripped it out after a year because he found himself ordering takeaways rather than cook, to avoid the cleaning nightmare that was the splashback. Could be he's just incompetent though.

sybilwibble · 24/05/2012 11:14

we used to have one in our last house - it was fine. Our cleaner would give it a weekly buff with baby oil and in between I used to use Flash Special Surfaces on it which is fab stuff, but not easy to find. I can't get it in my local big Tesco or Sainsbury but can get it on Ocado.
