Bathrooms without windows - OK to live with, or not?

We've seen a house - not a love affair, more of a least worst option IYSWIM - and as this yes-or-no will be a head not heart decision, I would appreciate the collected wisdom of Mumsnet.

So....

Internal bathroom with extractor fan but no window or natural light. Normal, or nightmare?

We have no window but installed a sun pipe and it's really light. We have an extractor fan than turns on with the light, no problems with damp at all and it was installed over 6 yrs ago. I would happily consider a bathroom without a window again.

Having lived in a few NBs none of which had windows in bathrooms I can honestly say it hasn't really bothered me-extractor fans have always been good. I don't think you really need a window in a bathroom as long as there is a fan and other windows nearby to get air circulating.

Lovely - lots of positives here, thank you! I was thinking of it as a negative, but I really fancy the idea of a boudoir bathroom now....

I'm off to see what DH's current ponderings on this one are.

A lot of people have an aversion to ventilation, and either switch fans off, or refuse to switch them on. You can get quiet and powerful extractors, especially the ones intended to be used with trunking or ducts. Leave a gap under the bathroom door for resh air to be sucked in from the rest of the house, and you can have a bathroom that is neither damp and mouldy, nor stinky.

I prefer an extractor that comes on with the light switch, every time, and runs on afterwards, it's the only way to defeat those people who don't like ventilation.

My bathroom window ventilates beautifully and lights up the room. Both of these qualities are brilliant enough in themselves but I also don't have to use electricity to get fresh air or light during the day, saving electricity and consequently fossil fuels. And, I don't feel like I'm bathing in an underground bunker simply to maintain profit margins of builders and developers.
Ideally, I would always have a window and with a fan avalable to switch on when showering if it is inconvenient or too cold to have the window open.

It must be a lot of hard work going through 5 year old theads to leave a link to a product you're advertising.

I wonder what the op did do in the end.

Definitely not a dealbreaker, provided there is very good extraction and nice lighting. Think of posh hotel bathrooms!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/04/2017 10:00

Our 2nd bathroom has no window. Obviously we would prefer it with one, but we've been here for decades now and are quite used to it - don't even think about it any more. Extractor fan goes on with the lights.
We did think of putting a sun pipe in (brings daylight via mirrors from the loft) but have never got around to it.

Perhaps more important in a bathroom are a good shower and plenty of space for toiletries/towels/loo rolls etc., and our bathroom has all those.

We don't have windows in any of our bathrooms. They are fully tiled floor to ceiling all way around and look amazing.

We do have fantastic lighting- recessed spots, sun tubes and huge mirrors with ambient light around them. Also have v good extractors.

No hotel bathrooms have windows.

It's been 5yrs! The OP has probably bought and sold the flat in that time.
