Our painter painted an exterior fence gloss.
It was meant to be matt!

Can you paint over this?

You'd have to sand the paint lightly or the next coat won't 'stick'. Shouldn't take very long at all. Unless it's a very very long fence!

ordinary paint will not last long when exposed to the weather like that. it will crack, blister and peel. It wil not stay glossy for long.

  1. What sort of paint was it? What primer was used?

  2. Is it a panel fence (lapped?) Or featheredge/closeboard? Or post and rail? picket? Or what?

  3. how old is the fence, and was it thoroughly dry when painted?

It is a picket fence.
Painted on wed. Doubt fully dry as we had rain all mon & tues.
If not dry what will happen?
Not sure of pain used as I did not supply it.
Can't remember name of primer.

OK, people sometimes do paint picket fences. I doubt the paint will last well, due to werather exposure. I would recommend a "breathing" microporous paint as the wood will get very damp in wet weather, and very dry in the sun. Ask the painter what he used and use the same brand.

If you are going to apply a matt or eggshell, I would only do the front face of the fence to save work. If the paint is still too soft to rub down, you can sometimes apply an extra coat and it will still stick because it bonds to the soft paint, but clean it well first.
