Radiators in an old house, any advice?

I need to replace the very ancient radiator in our den and cant decide what to go for.
We'll be painting the walls a dark colour so I may go for a tall column radiator in a dark colour a bit like this,
www.bestbathrooms.com/HighGloss_Black_Modern_Vertical_Designer_Radiator__1600mm_x_342mm/cid7532pr55656.html

Has anyone used something similar?

Our house is Victorian with high ceilings and lots of period features so I dont want to put in a standard radiator.

Also where it the best place to put it?
It can't go under the window as we have working sliding shutters and panelling.

Options are behind the door or to have two, one each side of the window.

Any suggestions?
TIA

Have a look at these or these.

The volcano has fins with more surface area which means they give out more heat using smaller rads. They come in loads of different sizes and colours.
The Ancona works in trad or contemporary and you can choose height, width and depth so you can have single, double, triple etc column depth. You can also either wall hang them or have feet. They also come in loads of colours although anything but stock colours has a 4-6 week lead time.
I've got volcano ones through my house and have installed Anconas for almost every client and everyone's happy!

As for positioning, two is better, preferably in opposite corners of the room. Smile

I've got one like that in the kitchen. It doesn't throw out much heat, to be honest, but to be fair it's narrower than that (five 'rungs' or whatever you call them) and it's a large room so should have more than one really. We have underfloor heating to make up the difference. Everybody admires it though Smile.

Thanks for the links fresh.
Do you think a tall rad either side of the the sash window would look ok?
Cant put them in opposite corners due to the fireplace and alcoves.

DH reminded me we do have some cast iron rads in our shed which need renovating, so that is another option.

Yes, I think that would look fine as long as they weren't taller than the window. If you want curtains, leave space for them to stack!

If you've got cast iron, they'll suit the property better. Have you a sensible place to put them though? You need to look at the airflows (hot air rises blah de blah), you don't want to draw cold air from the window or under the door across the room. You'll freeze.

To refurb, send them to be sand blasted and sprayed. Gun metal grey looks great, and cast iron holds heat brilliantly. You need to get all the layers of old paint off though or the heat can't get out.

Thanks, will have a good look at our cast iron ones.
Like the idea of gunemetal grey esp as the walls will be a dark colour so this would look much better than white I think.
