Downstairs loo with no sink...

Hi

We've moved into a house that needs a lot of work and we have a tiny budget.

The downstairs loo is a tiny cupboard room and there isn't a sink in there. Our house is long and thin and the loo is at the end of the house. You have to pass through a small hall and then the kitchen to get to the rest of the house - living room etc. My question is, is it ok to ask guests to wash their hands in the kitchen after using the loo or should I leave a bottle of the alcohol handwash stuff you get in hospitals in there????

Trivial I know, but as we can't afford to have the plumbing done to put a sink in there yet, it's on my mind! Thank you Smile

I would do both.

We had this for several years, I was never quite happy with people coming all the way back to the kitchen to wash their hands - the kids often just "forgot" Hmm
So I always left a gel cleanser in there - there's one that comes with a pump dispenser which was easiest.
Many grown ups would use the gel and then come to the kitchen and wash again cos they didn't "trust" it, but each to their own.
Have a specific hand towel in the kitchen.

Get one of these: combi loo and sink

Wow such fast answers - thank you - felt sure it was way too boring to get any replies Grin

Am relieved you're not shocked and horrified - was worried any friends visiting would be really put off... I always have a separate towel in the kitchen for after loo handwashing and will get some hand gel forthwith.

titchy - I've seen those around. Wont the loo get soaked every time you wash your hands?? Suppose it solves space issues tho...

Thanks everyone!

Cool, Titchy!

There must be a tiny bit of wall space for a cloakroom basin? A corner one?

But gel a good stop gap

I have my eye on an IKEA tiny basin which sits on top of a tiny cupboard - think there will be just room. But it's the cost of plumbing/buying etc which means it's a next year job I think...

Think carefully when you eventually store a washhandbasin - we found those tiny siinks with cupboard below meant we couldn't actually sit on the loo because the cupboard below took the knee space up - so check carefully
However we did get an absolutely minute basin (sort of oblong shaped) which is fine.

Sorry - I meant eventuallyinstall a washhandbasin

Gel OK IMO - my friend does this, her loo is on the half-landing (very odd house layout!).

That loo is nifty....

Installing a sink in there really won't cost that much, and could be done by an amatuer with relatively basic DIY skills, IF there is a hot-water pipe nearby. If there isn't a hot-water pipe close then you may have been given a prohibitively expensive quote, but the main cost of the pumbing will be running a hot line from elsewhere in the house - this may be a cheaper alternative?

The previous house we had didn't have a sink in there either, and even though it was much closer to the kitchen (just through a small back-vestibule) I wasn't comfortable with either family or guests washing dirty-hands-from-the-loo in the kitchen sink when the water would splash onto clean washing up on the draining board (maybe that was mad of me) - so I installed a sink.

this one is the smallest sink I could find.

We were in a similar situation for a number of years. Even when we finally had the budget, we struggled to get a plumber to do the job. In the end, we got one of the triton water heaters & it is great. Our tiny basin is a Laufen. I hated the lack of washing facilities & was more excited by finally sorting this out than by getting a swanky new house bathroom!

I dont have any advice - but just wanted to say I loved the loo/sink combo! Smart!

Once I went to a local hairdressers - and asked to use the loo before my appointment. there was no sink in there. I know that the salon has lots of sinks in, but they can't expect staff and customers to go to the bog - and then go and wash their hands in a hair washing basin??

Am amazed it passed any hygiene regs... maybe it didnt?

The loo-sink combo is a cunning idea - but it has cold-water only to the tap - I don't think I'd be happy with that - fine sometimes, but sometimes you do actually need hot water!
