Look at bamboo from simply bamboo cheaper and better than most wood.

I had bamboo flooring in my last house and it marked (dented) quite a bit. In my new house we have had solid oak put in and find it is much more hardwearing. Love the look of both!

We have engineered wood. We bought oak flooringa few years ago but due to a reaction with the house floor base the whole thing lifted up. So we went for engineered this time which looks like real wood but is more stable to changes in temperature etc.
It's kept it's appearance well. We have two dc and had it down for six years. I do find it cold though and each week it's a big space to sweep and mop.

More expensive to fit. Costwise, you have to shop wisely - I can source 80/20 wool (not from the internet) for say under £20 per sq m (can actually get it for £12 but assuming most can't). 14mm one plank engineered oak flooring (not from internet) for say £23 per sq m. Then, you have the usual underlay, etc on top. It's also better to take the skirting off first otherwise the cheap option would be to apply beading at the edges. My flooring source fits carpet for £125. He will fit the wooden floor at £10 per sq m (which is a good price since I have other fitting quotes at double that!) I have 100 sq m so a big difference in fitting costs.
